Disney's The Little Mermaid (2008 Original Broadway Cast)

I bought this as a gift for my 7 year old, but I listen to it more than she does. We saw the show in NY in August and this cd transports us back to Broadway each time we listen to it. The songs written to showcase "Prince Eric's" voice are so beautiful they bring tears to my eyes. You will love this music!

Young Frankenstein: The New Mel Brooks Musical

Being a fan of THE PRODUCERS I was excited when this show first was announced, and then dismayed by the so-so reviews it received on Broadway. Still, having heard a couple of tracks off of the cast recording and loving them, I purchased the YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN cd, and thoroughly enjoyed the entire score. Sure, the critics had it in for Mel Brooks and panned his project, but the score and the cast are all top notch. Definitely not Sondheim, but if you love music along the lines of Irving Berlin, you will not be disappointed in this recording.

Passing Strange

I was one of the lucky ones who got to see Passing Strange while on Broadway in New York. What struck me about the show was that this is unforgiving rock and roll. It never slips into "Broadway" like most other rock shows do. The story line is moving and the music is just amazing. I listen to it over and over and over. Even if you don't know the play, the music is just fantastic and you get a clear understanding of the story line just through the lyrics. MY FAVORITE CD OF 2008.

Let me state upfront that I absolutely loved the 1980 original movie soundtrack, featuring 5 ELO tracks on Side 1, and 4 John Farrar-penned Olivia Newton-John plus the ELO/Olivia title track on Side 2. The movie was horrible, but the music was great. Fast forward to 2007 when the news came that Xanadu was being worked into a Broadway musical. Well, I was skeptical, but no more. I was in New York recently on a business trip, and jumped on the chance to see it. Somehow the play works great where the movie didn't and it was a guilty pleasure all over for me.

Adding Machine: A Musical

I too purchased "Adding Machine: A Musical" due to the encouraging and glowing earlier reviews. I suspect there may be a real disparity between those seeing and commenting on the staged show and those basing their reviews on the recording alone. I imagine the staged show could be an interesting and praiseworthy achievement, but the recording alone is what we are supposed to be reviewing here. I cannot imagine anyone taking great pleasure in repeated listens. A four or five star review for a unique and intriguing stage show is understandable (even one that offends the ear), but I doubt the average listener would find this recording such a remarkable experience.
