There are some very favorable reviews of this CD and I liked it mostly too but I still expect more from a Morrisette CD.
The first few songs are forgettable - "Underneath", "StraightJacket" and "Versions of Violence".
"Not as We" is about the harsh end of a romantic relationship and it very good and pure:
"Day one day one start over again
Step one step one
I'm barely making sense for now
I'm faking it I'm pseudo making it"
...
"From scratch begin again but this time I as I
And not as we"
"In Praise of the Vunderable Man" is much more like Alanis - talking about her relationships with men and it's fun sounding.

I must admit that I don't usually like reviewing CD's and I must admit that I only listen to a few songs on this CD but if it came with only those songs, it would still be worth it.
I've been a Sarah fan for quite some time and, by accident, I discovered she did a hauntingly beautiful cover of "Gloomy Sunday." I searched high and low to find that this song was only on the CD Rarities, B-sides & Other Stuff which I promptly bought off of amazon.
Unfortunately, the first CD arrived cracked. I was heartbroken as I tore into the package wanting to listen to that beautiful song and realized I had to wait even more. The second delivery was uneventful (save for some neighbours stealing my mail) and I was soon able to grace my ears with ... Read More:

I was a big fan of Ray of Light, American Life, Music, Confessions..., etc. I was very excited to see Madonna coming out with a new album and figured she would continue with the more mature sound/less outrageous attitude she embraced starting with Ray of Light....I was mistaken.
I understand Madonna became famous thanks to her sexuality-injected early songs (Like a Virgin, etc) but was hoping that was all behind her. Aside from the dumbed-down, unappealing lyrics and unappetizing 50+ year old in-your-face sexual Madonna, Timbaland is an overplayed hack and doesn't have half the talent of William Orbit or Mirwais...overall I am very dissatisfied with this album & it will stay on the shelf.

Sarah MacLachlan was the creator of a decade of sound, and a plethora of influenced musicians. Her sound still echoes in the the music being produced today. She was a great writer of ballads. This album is one that can be so easily listened to. No pretense, no electronic covering. The moments of silence are held as highly as are the moments of sound.

It's really weird how the same music can affect different people in such radically different ways. The varied opinions of VIVA LA VIDA on this forum are striking. I've never really considered myself to be much of a Coldplay fan (was always more into Radiohead, by comparison) but - wow! - they really won me over on this one. I took a liking to it immediately.
Every song here is top quality and every song is expertly composed and orchestrated. Major props to Brian Eno whose production style is clearly evident. The musicians are never flashy - every instrument serves to compliment Chris Martin's superb vocal melodies. Chris has grown quite a bit as a vocalist and he sings in surprizingly different ways throughout the album.

Once again I feel compelled to comment on Emmylou's music. When I first saw this disk I read various reviews here whining that this album is a "downer" and the like. I smiled to myself and bought it without a second thought. I would have bought it no matter what the reviews said. Yes, Emmylou sings about pain, but she also sings about redemption and perseverance, the dawn that follows the darkness. Anyway, what price do you put on music that brings tears to your eyes?
But I am writing just to comment on one track from this disk. "All That You Have Is Your Soul", a song that did not grab me when I heard the author's version two decades ago, is rescued here and made Emmylou's own. The song includes the lines: "hunger only for a taste of justice, hunger only for a ... Read More:

I've been waiting for Alanis to come out with a new CD for a while. She maintained her artistic vibe and deep lyrics. There is a mix of intense and softer songs. Loved it.

Steve still has it! Not a whole lot of broken ground here, but solid music with great percussion, and classic organ. His voice is still as good as when he was with Spencer Davis doing "Gimme some lovin". Nice surprise.
