Al Green became a bonafide superstar thanks to this all-time classic album. In a way, Al was the natural successor to Otis Redding (both singers had a great many vocal similarities) but Green's smooth and sensous style and romantic crooning enabled him to cut across different established formats much to his benefit. While not as essential as "Call Me" this CD should be in your collection if you like heartfelt and soul-stirring music.

Another great album, though it might not be able to match its predecessor. The songs are all good and fine - the hit title track, another one of Al's smooth orchestrated soul songs; the mildly funky "Stand Up," the wonderful "Have You Been Making Out O.K.?," which has Al's voice in top form, the slightly menacing sexual energy of "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)," and "You Oughta Be with Me," which has one of Al's best melodies and a fine performance from guitarist Mabon Hodges; there are some interesting string arrangements in places ("Your Love is Like the Morning Sun"), and I even like the two country covers ("Funny How Time Slips Away," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry") because they don't sound a thing like country songs - instead, they're done ... I by in large listen to hard rock and metal but this LP is so good that I would truly put it in my top 10 favorite CD's of all tiime. You can't be a music fan with out this release.

This work is what I consider the only true new rhythm and blues on the airwaves. Neo soul does not work for me. While it is a new album the songs and singing styles are from the 70" which is so great to hear.
In previous work Al seemed to be stuck between gospel and R&B, but he is clear on this album 'cause it is all about R&B. Also there are great duets. I wish I could hear more of it on the airwaves.

If you are a fan of '70s Soul then you must get this CD. By itself, the glorious "God Bless Our Love" should grant this CD "Classic" status as said song is worth the price of admission alone. Other gems to be found on this classic set are "Sha La La (make me happy)", "Take Me To The River" and "School Days". It's well worth pointing out that on a few of this CD's songs (most notably the Curtis Mayfield-esque "The City") Al Green and his producer Willie Mitchell veered away from the romantic Soul which made him a superstar and ventured into the socio-conscious Soul so closely associated with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The O'Jays and Curtis Mayfield. This may not have been Al Green's strongest-selling album but no Soul fan should be without it either.
Release Date January 24, 2006
While neither as powerful nor as mind-blowing as "Call Me" or "Let's Stay Together" this CD has plenty to recommend it. Classic songs like "Let's Get Married", "Sweet Sixteen" and his ultra-soulful remake of The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" make this album a real treat for fans of classic '70s Soul. The combination of Al Green, producer Willie Mitchell and the Hi Rhythm Section made for some superb Soul music.

Al Green's 2nd album, 1970's "Green Is Blues" is a nice mix of stylish covers and a couple originals. The Right Stuff label has reissued this Hi release with a 4 bonus tracks, remastering and doing a nice job technically with this release. "Talk to Me" has Green's swinging soul groove that is sure to set your hips in motion. Green's cover of Smoky Robinson's "My Girl" is a soft gentle rendition, then the horns come in to punch up the mix. "The Letter" is a slow smoker as Green milks his romantic longing. Green's funky James Brown-inspired "Get Back Baby" comes before his pulsing version of the Beatles' "Get Back." The original release ended with Gershwin's "Summertime" that Green takes into a slow mellow stream as opposed to the popular Billy Stewart ... Read More:

Al Green is a soul legend. That's a fact. But I never found a compilation of him as perfect as this fine one. Here you can find all the great hits from this soul king born in Forrest City, Arkansas in 1946. From "Back Up Train" with the Soul Mates, to "Perfect To Me" recorded in 2004. The sound is perfect (all the tracks have been digitally remastered) and the photographies included in the cd are simply amazing.
21 tracks complete this strongly recommended cd from a man who symbolized the secular and the sacred that gave soul music its emotional power.
