CD-Charts VHS : The Lion King

The Lion King

starring: Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly
directed by: Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff

Release Date March 03, 1995
The best Disney animated film ever...This film had it all, it was funny, emotional, had family drama, and above all, great animation and songs! My personal favorite character is Rafiki, the Baboon! I still cant forget the line he says to Simbe, "Past can hurt, but as I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it!" it is so true! i loved Zazu's weirdness, and shenzi's humor, above all, i loved Pumba's innocence and Timon's intelligence! In short, i found the film the best film ever... The voice cast is also great. Mathew did complete justice to Simba, and what can I say about Mufasa, He is the best King, and dad anyone can ever get! The movie is not meant for kids, its meant to teach every adult a lesson...to find our place in the great ... Read More:

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride

starring: Matthew Broderick, Moira Kelly, Neve Campbell, Liz Callaway, Michelle Horn
directed by: Rob LaDuca, Darrell Rooney

Release Date October 27, 1998
The Lion King is one of the greatest animated films ever to grace the silver screen. In my opinion, it battles it out for the top spot with Beauty and the Beast and maybe Toy Story. Everything about it was beautifully created-- the animation (who could ever forget the famous stampede), the music (Circle of Life, Be Prepared, Can you feel the love tonight are among Disney's best), the story (taking Hamlet to the animal kingdom). There was a brilliant villain in Scar voiced magnificently by Jeremy Irons, a complicated hero in Simba and a strong supporting cast of comedic roles. And it ended perfectly-- there was no need for a sequel because the audience is left with the sense that Simba has finally overcome his guilt about his father and will do just ... Read More:

CD-Charts VHS : Mr Holland's Opus

Mr Holland's Opus

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas, Olympia Dukakis, William H. Macy
directed by: Stephen Herek

Release Date November 12, 1996
Mr. Holland's Opus
This DVD is a bit long, but it includes some great music, fine acting, and many touching scenes. I saw it on TV one evening, and decided I needed to get the DVD so I could watch it several more times. Richard Dreyfuss is outstanding as Mr. Holland, a high school music teacher and father. The film covers his life from his first days as a teacher to his forced retirement many years later. His love of his wife and deaf son as well as his dedication to teaching touches many lives through the years. He experiences many highs and lows. If you appreciate great acting and music, you'll love this film.

The Lion King 1 1/2

starring: Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Julie Kavner, Jerry Stiller, Matthew Broderick
directed by: Bradley Raymond

Release Date February 10, 2004
I loved the Lion King, and even enjoyed the second one. This however, totally destroys the first one. All it does is take the first movie and stick Timon and Pumbaa where they don't belong, along with throwing in some random things about Timon's family. There is one cute song in the beginning, but that is one of the only redeeming qualities of this movie. You might as well watch the original, and if you want a new and interesting plot watch the second. Don't waste your time on this

Cutting Edge

starring: D.B. Sweeney, Moira Kelly, Roy Dotrice, Terry O'Quinn, Dwier Brown
directed by: Paul Michael Glaser

Release Date January 09, 2001
As expected, an old plot, a very old plot, done with new technology, new faces and in color. Like an ice cream sundae, always good for a few minutes of relaxation, with no lingering negative after effects.

CD-Charts VHS : Chaplin

Chaplin

starring: Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin, Paul Rhys, John Thaw, Moira Kelly
directed by: Richard Attenborough

Release Date January 12, 1999
This review refers to the 1998 DVD edition, the only edition available as of this writing. "Chaplin" is a well-crafted, well-acted biography of the famous silent-screen actor/comedian. The transfer of this 1993 film to DVD is adequate. The format is letter-boxed widescreen (not anamorphic--there are black bars on all sides of the image on a large-screen TV. The side bars are not seen on a smaller screen TV). The picture is fairly sharp, the colors are good, sound quality is fine. The film has an old look about it, but this was probably the intended effect. This is the kind of movie you will watch more than once, so it's worth the purchase price. Highly recommended!

Dangerous Beauty

starring: Catherine McCormack, Rufus Sewell, Oliver Platt, Fred Ward, Naomi Watts
directed by: Marshall Herskovitz

Release Date May 04, 1999
Dangerous Beauty is in my top 50 of all time favorites. It has something for everyone - romance, humor, history - and is underscored by a lovely soundtrack. The characters are well cast. My daughter did a term paper on Veronica Franco and the role of courtesans and women in the 16th century after seeing this. I heartily recommend this little known gem.
