This is an impressive collection-- a century's worth of great music. 26 discs, covering many different genres.

And while there is plenty of variety here, it is very much weighted to the modern era. Only eight of the 26 discs contain pre-1950 material, and of those eight, most contain only about half-a-disc's worth of pre-1950 material. It is certainly true that fewer recordings were made in the early days of the technology, but to call it a "Soundtrack for a Century" and ignore half the century seems very misguided.

What would have made a much more interesting collection would have been a set that looked at the most popular recordings of each era and genre. Since there are six discs of "pop" music here, why not ... Read More:

This boxed set is everything I was hoping for... ...great broadway shows, original cast recordings, and a great savings. Kiss Me Kate was recorded 51 years ago but the quality is great. Chorus Line and South Pacific are the same way. This is a great find!

There isn't much to recommend this recording over the 1949 OBC, except that this recording is in stereo and the OBC was mono. In 1959, the original Broadway stars of KISS ME KATE were reunited, to record a studio album of the score in the new stereo format. While time did little to diminish the amazing vocal prowess of Patricia Morison, Alfred Drake, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang, the overall recording is so similar to the OBC that it's almost frightening.

As my fellow reviewer Mark Andrew Lawrence has noted, Pembroke Davenport returned to fill the position of musical director, and the same snips and trims are evident from the original album.

Considering this was Patricia Morison's third KATE album (following the original ... Read More:

I'm not a Broadway musical lover in general, but this recording is TERRIFIC! I've compared it to more contemporary versions, most notably the 1953 movie version with Ann Miller, and it remains the gold standard. Hysterically funny lyrics, great tunes, wonderful, operatic-style delivery in many cases. This version ...the original ... is so much bawdier (and yet classier) than any more modern one. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!
