A Rainbow at Midnight

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Jimmy Wakely

Release Date April 29, 2008
Discovered by Gene Autry, Jimmy went on to act in 28 B-movie westerns, but while they were reasonably successful in their day, Jimmy was first and foremost a singer. His baritone voice and crooning style was often compared to that of Bing Crosby, though Jimmy's musical background was very different. Yet while Bing Crosby was comfortable recording country - and western - songs, albeit with orchestral arrangements, Jimmy eventually achieved some of his biggest hits when he crossed over into pop. More than any other singer of his generation, Jimmy helped to blur the line that divided country music from pop music. Jimmy was poorly served by CD releases until Jasmine (a British record label) decided to put that right. Their first release From Cowboy ... Read More:

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Hank Penny

Release Date July 18, 2000
I am a friend of Hank's widow through a mutual friend and have seen Hank and Shari's daughter, Syd, grow up through pictures via the family friend. Hank's music is alway brought up and I've heard clips of his music, and was attracted to this album after listening to samples. I am so pleased to have purchased this album as it brinks Hank back to life. His song, Little Red Wagon, is a classic which should be played today, and surely is a legacy for his new grandson. This is an easy listening CD and is much enjoyed. Dennis Stiffler, Bremerton, WA

Best of Arthur Godfrey: The Old Redhead

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Arthur Godfrey

Release Date June 12, 2001
I bought this CD just for the song "Too Fat Polka", and I have to tell you, the version is the best I have ever listened to. It keeps a great polka beat and is just hilariously done. And to be truthful, I listened to the rest of the CD and found it to be very entertaining. Great stuff. Arthur Godfrey was a little before my time and I will leave the history or reviewing to those that actually listened to and/or watched him. But I tell you this, I was happy that I bought this CD and added it to my collection. One gets a little history lesson and great musical entertainment at the same time. If anything, you can't go wrong with Arthur Godfrey's "Too Fat Polka". This CD was just right for me!

Park Avenue Hillbillies and West End Cowboys

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Dorothy Shay

Release Date October 09, 2001
This album is as enjoyable as it is offbeat--from beginning to end. The songs mostly deal with the collision/collusion of a corn-ponish (is that a word?) country and western swing sensibility with a more refined cosmopolitan jazz band and pop music attitude. The results are incredibly clever, often hysterical, songs that read like vignettes of American culture clash. From the sepulchral western swing tones of Zeke Manners and His Swing Billies' "Mr. Ghost Goes To Town" (you gotta hear this!) to the wonderfully politically barely-correct more urbane Dorothy Shay (featured on 10 of the 25 tracks), there's a surprise at every turn here. Hell, even Arthur Godfrey and Dinah Shore deliver the goods. A wonderful album that's held together by an inventive ... Read More:

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Rosemary Clooney

Release Date
Some customers may be put off by the price of this collection, but it's worth every penny to those who want to hear countless treasures from one of the most legendary singers of the century. This set contains virtually all of Rosemary Clooney's recordings from her first in the mid-40's as part of the Clooney Sisters, through the mid-50's, which includes her most popular singles for Columbia.

However, the collection's greatest treasures are the many little-known ballads, long-forgotten since, performed in a way that only Rosemary can sing them... these songs showcase the unique quality of her voice and the incomparable method of her singing technique. It is these little-known masterpieces that you won't hear anywhere else, and the sound ... Read More:

Follow the Narrow

Search: Wide Open Spaces
by: Clear

Release Date January 01, 2000
You might want to see my review of Clear's initial effort with the same title - viz., "Clear." It is not usually the case that a group of musicians produces a second album that is better than the first, especially when the first approached perfection. But in this case, Clear's "Follow the Narrow" surpasses its first effort, yet in a delightfully different way.

Members decided to showcase their acoustical talents. All are very talented; and they did a great job. From the title track "Follow the Narrow" to the last, "End of the Day," this is a symmetrical work that you will want to sit down and listen to all at once - and more than once. It is obvious that a lot of work went into this second production.

I don't know what the future ... Read More:

by: Leslie Satcher

Release Date January 30, 2001
At the Grand Ole Opry and she really stood out. High energy, tight harmony, star power. I didn't know who she was but asked for the CD when it came out. Always like to see people interpret their own music, over covers.

Do see her live if you can. Good production values on the CD BTW.
