Poulenc: The Carmelites

Search: Whats Going On
from: Chandos

Release Date October 17, 2006
When the Met did its first production of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1977, there was only one recording of this opera available in the U.S., the one recorded during the composer's lifetime. Then came a video from Australia in the late '80s, a spiffy new CD set from the Lyon Opera in 1992, and with the composer's centennial in 1999 several other videos and soundtracks, including ones in German and the original Italian (for the La Scala premiere in 1957). It was Poulenc himself who wanted the opera to be sung in translation, and Chandos has honored his wish by committing to CD a fine production by the English National Opera. This succinctly-titled version uses a new libretto with numerous subtle revisions that make the text easier ... Read More:

growing up my favorite music was the Cure, the Smiths, David Bowie and Kate Bush....and the Misfits. these artists shaped my view of what good music is.

here i am now almost 40 getting back into the cure.
so here is my impression of the Cure's the Cure album.

i really liked 5 songs on the Cure album. and there also was one other song that i tried hard to like (promise) but it just goes on too long. the music for promise is nice actually, it builds up nicely but mr.Smith just dosen't do much with it lyrically...it ends akwardly with him repeating the words "and i'm still waiting." would of been better with the music just sort of fading out. like i said i tried really hard to like it. so 5 good ones and one almost... ... "Anniversary", one of the songs on this CD, is without doubt the most poignant rendering of romance remembered and regret felt that I've heard in years. I know it's not kosher maybe to say so, but a tear escapes every time I feel the chords and hear the words. That aside, there's great big secure joy on here, too.

Being new to The Cure in the last two years, I don't come with a lot of baggage about all their stuff, thank god. I simply love the elegance, whimsy, and whiplash verbiage found here on "The Cure". I must buy another copy to get the bonus DVD! and watch these guys do it. Robert Smith is venial if you don't think this one's your thing.

Many people dislike this album, saying it's disjointed and underproduced. I feel these terms are misnomers for the truth behind this album.

To me, the album is a refreshing return to the early days of this band...days which found the band in one room, playing live, and figuring out their parts. It's a much more dynamic album with less production than more recent Cure albums. After listening to the lush soundscapes of Disintegration, Wish, and Bloodflowers, "THE CURE" sounds more in line with the production values of Seventeen Seconds and Pornography. Although synth instrumentation is evident, it doesn't overtake any of the songs. Much of the instrumentation can be attributed to simply guitar, bass, and drums. Maybe this is why they lost two ...
