I agree with all of the positive comments other reviewers have made regarding the value of the opera and the quality of the performance. Yes, the recorded sound is substandard, but I find that it still manages to convey a decent sense of the music and performance. However, since there are more recent recordings available of the opera, a person looking for a first recording should probably consider them.

This splendid 1971 recording of Tippett's early, gorgeous masterpiece, The Midsummer Marriage, has to be considered against the fact that American listeners know nothing of the work and little more about the composer. At its premiere in 1955, ciritcs found Tippett's music difficult, which is strange, because it is tonal, richly tuneful, and bustling with rambunctious energy. They also deplored the libretto, written by the composer, which has been summarized as "a chaotic jumble of Western and Eastern mythology and symbolism, part Dr. Who, part The Magic Flute, part hippy-dippy flower-power philosophizing, part Jungian psychology, and part working class transfiguration."
To be simplistic, the libretto is basically the quirky admixture ... Read More:

Even if my uncle Steve (Artie Lenin) wasn't featured prominently on this album I'd still love it. Gary has a great voice. Very simliar to Elvis Costello and the song selection here is perfect for a day of kicking back and getting a little introspective. While uptempo stuff like We Connect, Dancin' At The U.N. and You Only Get One Life (which features the reunited Flashcubes) are a lot of fun, Gary really shines on the slower more emotional stuff like Private Catastrophe and Troubled Mind (originally recorded by Catie Curtis). If you're into Jeffery Gaines, Elvis Costello or Billy Bragg, then you should definitely check this album out.

Overall fun, original and good CD. I like it but don't love it. I think it was worth the money though. I found out about this guy from the song that was on Scrubs. If you want to check out something a little different and like the clips of the songs, then i recommend you get the cd.
