Goodnight Ladies and Gents: The Creole Music of Lionel BelascoSearch: Used To by: Lionel Belasco Release Date April 06, 1999 Like a previous reviewer, I was introduced to Lionel Belasco through the Ghost World soundtrack. I loved all three of the songs and decided to look for more music by him. I was pleasantly surprised to find this. Its a great blend of calypso and some jazz and each song is different from the other but always top notch. There are fiddles, vocals and piano. All of the songs on here are wonderful and completely unforgettable. Houdini's vocals make some of these shine, and the instrumentals are moody at times, haunting at others and always compelling. There are also a few tracks that have Lionel speaking which are memorable as well. The liner notes are very complete and perfectly done. This cd gives you great music and history ... Read More: |

Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2, 1926-1927Search: Used To by: Butterbeans & Susie Release Date September 24, 1997 If you want the REAL, raw, uncut black comedy and folk humor that would appear in African-American theaters and nightclubs at the time, THIS is where you'll find it. BB&S were the King and Queen of double-entendre and catch phrases. "Your folks will wear Black" is a funny dialougue threatening mock violence and "Let the doorknob hit you" is a clever way of telling someone to get lost,. But BB&S' ALL TIME CLASSIC "I Want a Hot Dog For My Roll" is not to be missed here. Their most famous record, it's a risque gag about BB adveritsing his wares as a "Hot Dog" man to Susie, who is dissatisfied with what he has to offer. Imperial Dub, Vol. 1Search: Used To by: Mark Farina Release Date December 15, 1998 Imperial Dub, Vol. 1 is a great blend of Balearic, Chicago and San Francisco House. Groovy and Funky from start to finish with a host of tracks from one of the best producers of Balearic beat tracks, Dubtribe Sound System. The mixing is so-so, but after 10 years since its release I still listen to this album frequently. Noteable track mentions are "Format" by Spiral Jones, "Momentito Por Favor" and "No Puedo Estar Despierto", both by Balearic kings, Dubtribe Sound System. 4/5 stars |
