As a little kid growing up amongst the 8tracks and .33s and .45s of my parents collection a couple of albums stuck out as far as lifelong memories go. One of those bands was the ventures. Instrumental music with a "voice" of only drums, guitars, bass, and moog: could never get tired of listening to TELSTAR! The other band that stuck in my memory bank was Frankie Stein and His Ghouls, whom i thought were the venture's alter ego only with halloween like screams, moans, and doors creaking! On halloween we would open the door, turn the lights off and have Frankie pouring out of the speakers! It sure beat putting in a cd with 100 sounds when you could have good instrumental music plus halloween sounds at the same time! But it doesnt have to ... Read More:

well i see that guv'ner is still greatly lacking in the customer review dept(i left a review for their knight moves ep many moons ago, if anyone treated themselves to some of that groovy tunage).. so why not hear me out in trying to put words together that do this LP justice. well for starters it's got lots of character - in-joke humor that's at once universal and honest, badass guitar jags and shag room shimmer..
songs that end up in unexpected alleyways, smoking a spliff under a cherry blossom trees, making headlines and looking for a full-time drummer.. this is the real deal - an album made by music fans that's at times experimental but always within the perfect pop confection cake of song. you get a totally raw sugery sweet ... First of all I must point out I am a fan of John Entwistle. This review is hard for me to write because I was not impressed at all with this release. It does indeed have the 1980's sound but it doesn't have John Entwistle's sound. If you listen to his previous work he always injects a bit of humour into his lyrics and the musical arrangements are more imaginative. This has none of that.
This album sounds like any number of bands that were popular in the 1980's. It's not what a fan of John's would be expecting.
If you are not familiar with John's solo work outside of The Who I recommend NOT starting with this one.
Release Date February 07, 2006
The whole appeal of John Entwistle's work was his darkly-humoured writing, thunderous bass, and distinctive yet very capable vocals. None of this are easily found in The Rock, recorded in the mid-80s. It is chock-full of musical cliches from the era, both musically and lyrically (stock guitar riffs and synthesizers, trite lyrics).
It's really an Entwistle album in name only, as he wrote only 4 of the original 10 songs, defers lead vocals to Henry Small, and shows none of the musical complexity of his Who or '70s solo work. It does rock a bit, though, in a mindless way. And the review above is right, 'Love Doesn't Last' is the best song on the album.
If you want a better sample of some of his later work, get the 'Left ... Read More:
