This is the first Christine Lavin CD that I have purchased and I may have done better with a studio recording. I was introduced to Ms Lavin via XM Folk Village and have been watching her site to see if she ever ventured South for a performance but this seems very unlikely. The CD is very entertaining and has considerable "filler" between the songs as she interacts with the audience. Obviously some of the effect is missed with just an audio representation. I was a big fan of Harry Chapin and saw him perform multple times in both large and small venues and Christine appears to have that same stage presence that Harry utilized so well. I had this CD on my list to explore for some reason, probably because I heard its one real keeper, Homeless Club Kids, streamed somewhere. Think of Van Gogh's painting Starry Night. Then think of some enraptured enthusiast painting a copy of Starry Night for sale to the sidewalk crowd outside the MoMA here in New York. That's what My Favorite is to the Smiths, The Cure, etc, a pretty bleak alternative. The music is listenable and -- as the techo bonus disc also proves -- club danceable, the lyrics are mannered, depressing and banal all at once. On a few cuts the female singer Andrea Vaughn makes more of them than they deserve. Recommended downloads: The Happiest Days of My Life, Homeless Club Kids, Burning Hearts and the Black Cassette. As with most people in the States, I found Span through a Nissan Xterra commercial. A quick internet search uncovered the fact that [...] would stick with me for hours after I caught the commercial was owned by a Norwegian band named Span. After finally locating and purchasing this CD, I was completely surprised to find that the song in the commercial isn't a fluke. This CD is littered with incredibly energetic, melodic, soulfully-written rock tunes. Don't make the same mistake that the US record companies did - give Span a try and you won't be disappointed. They also have a second CD called "Vs Time" which I've not yet been able to get a hold of (STILL not available on Amazon), though I found a video of a cut off the recording and it is equally great.
