Even with the Twist missing from CD 2 (which Shout cheerfully replaced) this box set is 5 stars. So many great songs, so many I have never previously heard and such a diverse variety of styles, Blues ,Doo Wop R&B, Gospel even a surf instrumental. Great packaging. Lets face it, if you are into box sets your into booklets and packaging. A lot of thought has gone into the presentation of this box from the colour coded informative booklet to the Jewel cases. In my opinion only one track on the set is a dud every other is choice. I beleive this is one of the best produced Box sets available.

This is an absolutely wonderful nearly complete set of the recordings of Sister Ernestine Washington between 1943 and 1948. These include recordings with the Dixie Hummingbirds, Bunk Johnson's Jazz Band, the Southern Sons and her husband, Rev. Frederick D. Washington. Two recordings were not found for the album and, despite the best attempts of remastering, some of the albums found were clearly in poor condition. The result is that some tracks have enough background noise to be distracting - that is the only reason I reserve this album for the afficiado.

For those unfamilar with Ernestine Washington's work, the two better known gospel singers who have somewhat similar styles are Sister Rosetta Tharp and Marion Williams. There is a broad range ... Read More:

My All and All

The best cut on this album by far is Jesus on the mainline. That song alone will inspire you to call on our Savior for help and guidance. Ralph II sings lead on this cut with the band backing him up. His lead singing will blow you away. Also "I'm not Ashamed," and "I Firmly Promise you" are two I really like. Ralph Stanley sings lead on most of the cuts and like always does an excellent job singing. If you like Ralph Stanley or great bluegrass/gospel praise music this album is good. The only thing I would have done different is mixed up the song selection a little. I would add a few more up-tempo songs to balance out the styles. If you are planning on buying only one Stanley gospel album, and you don't have "Back to the Cross," purchase that one instead. Overall ... Read More:

Rory Block has an amazing voice for the blues: rough, throaty, mournful, bluesy and sweet. She's kind of Susan Tedeschi meets Bonnie Raitt, but then again she is all her own. On this live album (recorded in Germany in 1988) she does 20 unadorned basic traditional blues numbers (Walking Blues, Stagger Lee, That's No Way To Get Along), some by Robert Johnson, some by Mississippi John Hurt and Bukka White, as well as a few she wrote herself. They are all terrific, and are just simple blues: Rory accompanying herself on the guitar. If you like women singing the blues, this is one hell of an album, and if you don't like women singing the blues, well, you should give this album a listen and have your mind changed!
