These recordings date from 1975 (the ragtimes) and 1976. Vox was the Naxos of the LP era. They made rare repertoire available at cheap prices, in interpretations that usually were no more than serviceable. One definitive advantage of the CD reissues is that the Vox LPs were often marred by poor, noisy pressings, hampering a full appreciation of the recordings.

In this survey of piano music in America between 1900 and 1945, some of the expected warhorses are there - Gershwin's Three Preludes and Copland's Piano Variations - but mostly we get rarely if ever recorded pieces, roughly arranged in chronological order. Loudon Wainwright was a wanabee actor turned songwriter, who debuted with this album, in 1970. And what a stack of songs!

Wainwright's first two LPs were acoustic guitar/vocals, and starker than his mid 70's output, which was propelled by 'Dead Skunk.)

Still going stronger than ever, now in his early 60's, and still singing about getting old, I can't help but note that the first line of the first song of his first LP is "In Delaware when I was younger" (he must have been all of 23.)

I had this all on vinyl back in the early 70s. There is some wonderful stuff here, but it is far less refined and more somber in mood than his later material. It's a very young Loudon and his guitar, very stark arrangements, but a good album for LWIII fans looking for perspective on his career.

I don't know when I last enjoyed the sinfully sweet sounds of a string trio this much! From the bittersweet cello to the rich caramel of the viola, this is chamber music at it's very best. The violin playing adds a melodious crunch which I can still feel on my tasebuds. This is one sweet cd!
