Andy Partidge's demo albums "Fuzzy Warbles" have been a mixed bag for the XTC front man; the first two were terrific the second set quite good with a bit of filler while volumes 5 and 6 were the weakest of the lot but also had some of the best original songs on them ("I Can't Tell What Truth is Anymore", "Tin Circus of Life" from 6 and "I Defy You Gravity", the brilliant "My Land is Burning" and instrumental "Ice Jet Kiss"). The balance has been redressed with volumes 7 and 8.

We get a demo version of XTC's classic "Cherry In Your Tree" originally cut for the "Carmen Santiago" CD. We also get a brace of new demos for "Books are Burning", "Hold Me My Daddy", "Scarecrow People" (from "Oranges and Lemons")the lovely "Ballet for a ... Read More:

Skylarking

XTC is a love them or hate them type of band. I've found very few folks that fall between these extremes. Skylarking is an album that almost everyone in the latter camp likes and for good reason; it's a stunning song cycle that recalls the greatness of the Beach Boys, Kinks and Beatles best recordings without apeing them.
This edition returns the album to the glory it deserves; the sound quality is comparable to the MFS gold disc and the packaging is terrific. Ian Cooper should be commended for his work here--he manages to turn his craft into a fine art.

First heard this in 87 whilst driving across a Spanish plateau in seering heat framed by corn fields and distant Moorish castles. Gave me goose bumps then and still gives me goose bumps now. It is quintisentially Engish and is an example of "pop" in its purest form. Park yourself up by a lazy river, lie on the grass, put your head phones on and listen. Sheer quality.

From the bowels of Muscle Sheds and the back cupboard of Shabby Road Andy Partridge has given his fans the most comprehensive collection of demo recordings and out-takes ever assembled in one place by one artist (Pete Townshend's "Scoop" series notwithstanding.)

This collection was released as individual CD's via Andy's APE imprint and now you can get the whole kit and caboodle in a very attractive box made to resemble a child's stamp book with a nice booklet by Andy describing his experiences in home recording.
The earliest recording dates back from "Drums & Wires" and continue all the way to the last XTC album, also included are other anomalies like Andy's outgoing phone messages made for friends, scraps of ideas for songs, completed ... Read More:

there is a recently done fantastic 2 hour interview with Andy Partridge on [..]. I never knew how brilliant, literate, and hysterically off the wall funny this man is! I was listening to the download on my ipod while at the gym, and constantly burst out laughing, I am sure causing the other gym goers to think I was insane. His English accent made his stories all the more captivating. Andy talks in the interview about the making of this album, among many other things. His articulate wit left me obsessed with listening to and getting more of his music.
Yes, delightful album, better with time and repeated listening. I do not need to rehash the details other reviewers have outlined.
Another Satellite is my favorite. This is a dreamy magical album.

All the XTC albums sound phenomenally better than the original CD versions, and this one is testament to why it's Andy Partridge's masterpiece. Nice that the bonus material is now at the end of the CD, rather than in the middle. This one is interesting to hear for the original sequencing of songs, putting "Dear God" as a bonus. "Mermaid Smiled"--why was this left off the original CD? Great tune. Everyone should own this album.
