I am now 32, and I listened to this as a kid (repeatedly). We lived in a pretty isolated area and had no TV, etc. This (record back then) was my best friend. I still know every word by heart, and in retrospect, I believe it helped me to do really well with reading and writing throughout my school years. (They have added a new cover and a song sung by Elmo at the beginning). I think it helps kids learn to really like/develop a relationship with letters. Maybe that is going too far, but it is fun anyway and helps them learn all the sounds the letters make (phonics), which is all-important for learning to read.
