Naxos has done it again! After beginning several new series--the lives of famous composers, introductions to operas, Shakespeare plays--they are now offering one called "Classics Explained." In the first three entries, one long or two shorter works are analyzed, practically bar by bar, on two CDs by writer and narrator Jeremy Siepmann; and from what I have heard, this is going to be the most perfect effort along these lines yet--and with a budget price, something not to be passed up. Each CD set is accompanied by a thick booklet that is divided into 15 sections: The Composer and the Work, A Biographical Sketch, Place and Importance, The Work's Reception, an Essay, the Track List, an extremely detailed analysis (all the words of which are given ... I wanted to add a review for this CD because I think it's wonderful and the other reviewer here was I think a little too critical.
I've been getting into 60's bubblegum music in general and Boyce and Hart in particular. They are absolutely amazing- a souped up 60's swinging bachelor duet driving sports cars, wearing super groovy outfits, dating girls who look like stepped out of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (while maintaining a sexy bromance with each other that we gay fans cherish), Boyce and Hart lived the dream. Two aging songwriters who decided to cash in while the getting was good by writing strangely jaded songs for preteen girls that manage to rock your socks off.
My fave song here has to be "Two For The Price ... Read More:

This a very impressive box set meant for hardcore Abba fans or hardcore collectors.
It was relased in Japan earlier than it was in the US. It sells for 21,000 yen in Japan (about $200) I assume the reason for the higher price in the US is bulk import costs. I am uncertain if there is any difference with the US release but the Japanese release has a lot of materials.
Each disc is in a polyethelyne dust jacket inside a slip case with the original album art and a booklet nearly identical to the ones in the 2001 US release. The bonus disc has no booklet but the set itself includes a large 80 page booklet with album info and lyrics. About 95% of the booklet is in Japanese. There are also facsimilies from the Japanese releases of LP ... Read More:

Getting all ABBA's CDs in a box set for $100 sounded appealing to me. But, I'm more interested in fidelity of sound than in fancy packaging. The lyrics to all the songs are not included in this set. None of them are. Also, the remastering here is significantly inferior to European imports produced in the summer of 2001, in my opinion. I think the remastering on the "Waterloo" import from June 2001 is the best I've ever heard on an ABBA CD, even though the disc appears to be CD-R. With the above issues in mind, I am not impressed with the "paper sleeve" LP-style packaging on this box set, either. My recommendation would be to purchase ABBA's first five albums produced in Europe in June 2001, while they are still available. Although there are a few good ... Read More:

What can you say about Boyce and Hart other than the men could write a pop song. Sure, just like Mark Lindsay with the Raiders, they were copping Beatle licks and ideas, but who the hell wasn't? And before anyone compares them to the pop 'icons' of today, watch them on Bewitched AND I Dream of Jeannie. They definitely knew who they were and could give a knowing wink to the audience. Filled with great hooks, great singing, and a couple of 'why wasn't this song on the top of the charts instead of...' moments. Ignore the cheesy Vegas style photo and get inside the grooves, man ; - )

This album is as dark as anything by Leonard Cohen. There is nothing to prepare you for what you are about to hear. Sure, there was a hint of this on 'Super Trouper' ('Happy New Year', 'Our Last Summer'), but the melodrama has been dropped for something far more introspective and mature. These songs are autobiographical and you suddenly realise that with the exception of 'The Winner Takes It All', they had not expressed themselves in this way before. The opening song, 'The Visitors' is so powerful, from the menacing intro into the forbidding claustrophobic vocals from Frida to the slabs of dominating synths at the end of the chorus. It is a sinister foretelling which perfectly conjures fearful pictures of the Soviet Union in '81. It took a while for me to realise ... Read More:
