To hit five stars on the first try is remarkable enough, but to immediately call to mind Bill Evans, Kenny Barron, etc., demonstrates a talent in full bloom. This CD is packed with swinging standards and a couple of new compositions, but all played with such optimism that one cannot come away anything but a happier and richer listener.

In the mid-late 40's Dizzy put together a big band to play the new music which he, Charlie Parker, and others had pioneered a few years earlier. This album is less than 40 minutes long, and the sound quality is typical of recordings from that period, but each tune is a winner and the band puts in really tight performances, sometimes at breakneck tempos. Classics like "Salt Peanuts" mix Dizzy's goofy humor with virtuosic performances.
This CD may be short on quantity, but not on quality! Highly recommended.

i have both the us and uk releases of the lp's and this has got to be near the top of any live release by buddy. he caught some flack for having that fibes snare drum so prominently on the cover but it sounds great and i can see why he used it, and i bought one. i am disappointed that great stuff was left off this release; i seem to have read or seen that an expanded version is out there somewhere. i was able to cut out some of the talking and fit the 2 lp set on a single cd, so i figure they could have done the same. i have every lp and cd that i have come across since '66 - if i had to pick just one, this would probably be it!
the playing by buddy and the band and the recording techniques all come together for an incredible testiment ... Read More:

Yes, I believe if you want to hear one CD that defines the best of Buddy's sound and energy this is the one. It was released in the US as Rich in London in the 70's with the same cover photo (I wore out my vinyl copy) but fewer tracks and in a different order, so this more complete version has more music and the benefits of remastering. If you have the original, yes, it is worth getting this version too. I believe this is Buddy's strongest trumpet section with Lin Biviano carrying the lead. The complexity of some of the charts, particularly Little Train and Time Being, goes well beyond swinging and reveals how tight this band really was. And Buddy's solos show him at his peak of speed and agility.
The recording quality is excellent, as were most of ... Read More:
With some of the most significant Miles Davis albums EVER, this is a good place two start your exploration of this giant's opus. Two great albums orchestrated by Gil Evans ("Porgy and Bess" as well as "Miles Ahead") are equally rewarding as smaller group efforts with John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley ("Round about Midnight" and "Milestones") plus a rare compillation of the small group efforts ("58 sessinos"; featuring Cannonball, Coltrane, Bill Evans...).
BTW, on "Mile Ahead" you can hear Miles' artistry in flugelhorn; while the orchestral albums are an excellent exercise in cool-jazz, smaller groups develop hard-bop and occasionally hints of modal jazz as well.
In both cases Miles and company play beautiful standards ... Read More:
