I totally disagree with "A Music Fan," who gives a 1-star review. It's great to hear some of Dire Straits' better songs performed with a different vocalist, as some of Mark Knopfler's singing can be overwrought. Here, there is no attempt to replicate the eccentricity of Knopfler's vocals. Instead we have mellow, almost country-sounding vocals that achieve poignance when matched with some of Dire Straits' best melodies.

OK, somehow I lucked out. The version I have of "Twisting by the Pool" doesn't have disc rot. It sounds perfect and the video looks pretty good as well (although admittedly I haven't watched it in a couple of months). The point here is that this really needs to be reissued with the entire EP including the missing track from the original EP. Why Warner issued this with the live version of "If I Had You" (which is available on "Alchemy")instead of "Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts" is beyond me. Sound quality is extremely good considering that this was issued in the early days of CD (1987).

Plays Dire Straits

As a long time Dire Straits fan and the lack of anything new by the band I bought this thinking it might be worth a listen. That's about all I got out of it. The orchestra is good and the songs are accurate musically but it's a long way from the original. It won't fulfill my longing for the Dire Straits sound and therefore my recommendation is to get the original Dire Straits music instead.

Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits is a good compilation of a great rock band. Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist, lyricist and a gruff but alright vocalist. Robert Sandall has written a well-written and informative short synopsis/bio about the band. The cover is ok but a bit boring. The photographs are all very nice and well done especially the one shot of Knopfler as it captures his intensity as he plays his guitar. I definitely recommend this album. 4 stars indeed!
