For years I pined for a good cut on CD of "Cut Across Shorty" and in fact the whole Gasoline Alley album. Old college day memories of a mostly out-of-print album. Now, most of my rocking friends back then were audiophiles in their own way, and one thing I always have noticed is that the production quality of Rod's albums left a little something to be desired, while personnel, song choices, arrangement, were all mostly fantastic. At the time you could take Highway by Free and just be blown away by the dynamics of Kossoff's guitar and Paul Rodgers vocals: so why couldn't Rod's people capture that close realistic sound?

This French band took its cues from Elvis Presley and Chubby Checker, twisting the night away and covering numerous American rock tunes with goofy French translations, much like Johnny Hallyday in his early career. It's dorky, but fun -- better, actually, than many similar French rock acts. Worth checking out!

The Trojan Box Set: British Reggae

I have really enjoyed the trojan box sets, both for quality of music, and the value. But this one I realy didn't care for that much. Most of the tracks are really poppy and sappy. Mostly there are love songs and doo-woop sounding reggae, sounds like reggae produced for mass appeal. Not a very rewarding listening experience I think.

Twist with Keely Smith/Doin' the Twist

Louis and Keely made beautiful music together and occasionally separately, but here the estranged couple gets entangled in alot of uninspired trendy stuff. Louis' set is far superior, with a New Orleans flavor added to the "twistin'" motifs. "Alright, Okay, You Win" could never be unsuccessful, nor "Marie", and "The Continental Walk" might even provoke a smile from ol' Henry Ballard himself. Unfortunately the sensual stylist Keely Smith doesn't stand a chance because of pedestrian arranging and producing. Although she is given a proper voice level, the band is too far back - typical of the period. The mistake was to bring Keely to the Twist, instead of bringing the Twist to Keely. If you heard the CD, you'd know what I mean.

I strongly disagree with the other reviewers. I previously owned the Mercury Anthology 2 cd box, which has AWFUL sound quality. This has all the essentials & much improved sound & is often discounted to a really low price. Includes the entire Every Picture album (although oddly side 2 of the original album is on cd 1 & side 1 is on cd 2). For me this couldn't have been much better. Add Jeff Beck's Truth, Faces A Nod Is As Good As A Wink & Faces Best, and to me you've got a pretty complete collection of all of Stewart's worthwhile material. Even on the marketing angle as mentioned by another reviewer, this isn't trying to be a rarities set for collectors, just a really nice best of.
