This is the first of three Disc which chronologically go through the piano works of Percy Grainger. The CD starts with some Handelian pieces which he wrote when he was around 11. These pieces are charming and pleasant to listen to. Penelope Thwaites' playing is perfect as usual, capturing (esp. on In Dahomy) the vivacity with which Grainger played. This isn't the best of the Grainger Edition but you'll thoroughly enjoy it if you buy it!

Fibich is rarely recognized as a peer to Dvorak and Smetana even though the quality of his work, as exposed on this magnificant set of recordings, is universally high, always imaginative, excessively Czech in origin, and naturally enjoyable for anyone that likes the other Czech composers mentioned here. For a man who died at the ripe old age of 39, the quality and quantity of output is truly amazing. The tracks here cover 1935, when Fats was already an established pianist and composer, to 1942. 73 tunes in about as many months. There is but a small number of solo piano cuts, but nearly every track does feature a piano solo. Most selections are by "Fats Waller and his Rhythm" band, a snappy aggregation with Fats augmented by clarinet, trumpet, tenor sax, bass, guitar, and drums played by musicians mostly unfamiliar to me. There's also a few numbers where Fats plays celeste and organ.

moody interesting and very different. The last track sounds just like Metheny and that is the highest praise I can think of to give a musician.
