After listening to AIM's "Hinterland", I can say this isn't straight hip-hop as we know it. In fact, AIM offers a vast array of downtempo, pop, funk and acid jazz with embellishments of hip-hop. IMO, "Hinterland" would have sounded even better without the rap music, still, it's full of other surprises that overcompensate for this like the dreamy, "The Girl Who Fell Through the Ice", the super electro-funky, "What Do People Do All Day?", the sexy, 70s flavored "Good Disease", and the 60s go-go jamfest, "Vipco!" All in all, "Hinterland" is a very impressive sophomore effort from Andy Turner, and should fit quite nicely in your CD collection!

I don't understand the bad reviews here. Not all the songs are perfect, but there are some really inventive covers here from unknown bands. Bowie's music is tough to do badly and I think this is his best tribute album yet.

Thank god for re-issues. Otherwise the music would get lost to the ether.
The Microscopic Septet created my late-night underground soundtrack in the 1980s. No matter where I went, there they were. This jazz band (which happened to masticate, swallow, digest & excrete every other kind of music in its path) made the hoppingest, funniest, hottest music around. It was endless; every week they had new tunes. Each was a surprise, each was a joy.
Just read the titles. Then download the samples.
There is nothing else like this out there. You have to go out towards Mingus & Ellington, then take a sharp turn at Spike Jones and Slim Gaillard, and then consider everything that happened between then and now. ... Read More:

Between this and the other Microscopic lp "Beauty based on science", a whole other genre of noir-jazz is unleashed on hapless but eager listeners. The fun involved in what must have been a lengthy process nailing these highly arranged compositions by either Phil Johnston (saxes) or Joel Forrester (piano) is readily apparent, especially in "A Strange Thought Entered My Head". "Kelly Grows Up" is a lovely piece that could have come from the 40's, except the theme keeps convoluting so much, and the feel the septet bring to the performance is so gestural that you begin to realize these guys are pretty special. When they first presented this stuff at jazz festivals and shows, most folks didn't know what to think... unfortunately overlooking the great instrumental ... Read More:

she spent too much time around Richie Hawtin, mr. funkless.
lots of twee clever little blips, but not nearly enough that speaks to the booty. there are standouts (track 14 is nice and weird, and has some bass happening), but this could have been so much more. I've heard her play better tracks than these, juicy electrohouse and much harder minimal, dunno why that stuff didn't make the cut.

The title of this CD properly advertises itself as a multi-faceted work, including some core classical pieces, some extensions into blues and folk, and so on. But the cover art, and the tantalizing credits (3 vocalists including the great Bill Crofut!!!) made me yearn for something this was never meant to be. That is, a true folk concerto using banjos, guitars etc. and vocalists singing folk music, to the consistent accompaniment of an orchestra. In other words, something for folk music that has been achieved so well in other idioms (i. e. Kunzel's tributes to Western and country music, Russo's music for blues band, Deep Purple's work with orchestras, etc.). Only the very brief "Unsquare Dance" achieves that. The individual works, especially with the trombone, ... Read More:

I got this album because I am a die hard PWEI fan. They are my favorite band of all time. I new this was a "Greatest Hits" album when I got it and I already have all their albums so like I said I got it just cause I wanted to support the band. I must say I am greatly disappointed. Yes, this does have some of their best songs from their first three, u.s. released, albums. However, most of the tracks have been shortened or slightly remixed from the original versions. This is not good. The originals are MUCH better. If you already have all of PWEI's albums then there is absolutely no reason to get this compilation. If you are just getting into them, I suggest skipping this unless you are totally unable to find most of their earlier albums, such as "This is the Day...This ... Read More:

This CD has been around for a while now but it is still truly a good compilation of Science Fiction film music given a new dimension by being recorded digitally. The BATMAN selections composed by Danny Elfman are very powerful combing rousing elements with moody enigmatic passages. Most of the other selections are short or confined to one piece. The selections from TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and POLTERGEIST all composed by Jerry Goldsmith are all performed with passion and demonstrate Goldsmith's great versatility. Bernard Herrmann's "Outer Space" from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is brief but in effect makes it all the more powerful by its great innovation and lasting impact. The WAR OF THE WORLDS "Prelude" by Leith Stevens was a great surprise.
