Jimmy Yancey never fails to amaze and satisfy! Still, it has to be acknowledged that his later work was not always as fully realized as his classic masterpieces from 1939 and 1940. If you can afford to add this fine CD to your collection, by all means do so. If not, Volume 1 is still the essential one to own.

I found this to be a delightful collection of typical circus/carnival music. The instrument seems to be run on air, common with calliopes. For this reason you will not hear the ocassional off key screech, burrble or hoot caused by water carried over from a steam boiler. This calliope, while obviously a calliope, has a tonal quality that I find simply delightful.

For one, the instrument has several octaves and each octave seems to have qualities within qualities. The lower notes, for instance, are sometimes used to give a steamboat whistle or a somber mornful effect. I was slightly dissapointed because of so much hissing of the steam. It seems the the recording wanted to prove that it was a steam calliope rather than for the enjoyment of the music. I remember the parades down Walnut street in Muncie, the smells, gaudy sights of costume and the animals marching to the music of the calliope and the circus band. It is a good piece of nostalgia.
