Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

The folks at The Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center with their Artistic Director, Clarinetist David Shifrin, have produced a splendid recording of music written expressly for them. All performances are top-notch. The CD opens with John Corigliano's hauntingly beautiful dialog between violin and clarinet entitled "Soliloquy." Following is what is probably the finest work on the program, the clarinet quintet of Ellen Taffe Zwilich. It's a substantial and well-proprtioned work that really has something to say. It is chamber music in the true sense; everyone involved shares in the musical exchange. Joan Tower's quintet follows, and is of high quality, as one would expect from a composer of her calibre. It is fine music, but does suffer ... Read More:

I picked this CD up on a whim at a going out of business sale and it turned out to be a terrific music bargain. The songs are lyrical and often humorous. "Crossing That Room", about the hazards of crossing a darkened child's room in bare feet, is one every parent can relate to! "Are We There Yet?" (the interminable question while traveling with kids) is a sing-a-long for the whole family. Our son (4.5 years) considers this *his* tape, but I take it to work on occasion for a lift.
