If you've ever wondered why Jimi Hendrix was a huge fan of Clarence Whites, just listen to this live Byrds cd. In particular, check out the songs from Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde - Bad Night At The Whisky, King Apathy, Wheels On Fire - on these tracks Clarence White's Fender Telecaster snarls and crackles through some of fiercest solos in rock music. It wasn't just Hendrix who admired Clarence's style: former Byrd bassist, John York (who appears on this cd), has described Byrds' concerts during this time as always including numerous guitarists standing on the sidelines studying Clarences' technique and his use of the 7 string - string bender guitar which was invented by White's long-time friend and fellow Byrd, Gene Parsons. The crystal purity of Judith Durham's voice floats out of my CD speakers and I am transported back to a time when folk, rock and pop became one. This is great music - period. It is professionally done but not souless, familiar but not stale. If you don't find yourself singing along with the Seekers' originals or covers, then go back to your hip-hop. For me, these two CDs are another excuse to look like a crazy old coot singing away in traffic with my windows rolled up.

There have been many Seekers compilations but this is my favorite single CD. The most commonly available compilation, which has been re-issued several times in different packaging but usually titled Very best of the Seekers, is made up of their UK hits plus their entire debut album, with a couple of other tracks in the middle. It is an excellent compilation but, as I said in my review of it, the title Very best of is not quite correct. This compilation can claim to be the very best.

Here you get all the hits, though they are spread throughout the set. You also get their covers of folk songs, though not as many as on that other compilation, but what you also get here are their interpretations of contemporary material including some of their own songs that weren't hits.
