Excellent songs here in a multiplicity of styles. From a country sound (On The Greener Side, and Too Little Too Late), to big band blues (Sleep Keeps Me Awake), to jazz (Cement Lament), to full on rock'n'roll (Little Sister), to contemporary (Looks Like Mona Lisa), and even one that sounds like a Bob Fosse musical (Must Be Luff). All the singing, playing and arrangements are beautifully done.

I had heard of Michelle Shocked but had never heard her until I heard a couple of cuts from this CD on the radio while driving through central Arizona. I liked what I heard so when I got home I sought it out at my favorite music store.
It was enjoyed but forgotten until recently when my eye caught the label as I was going through my wall of CDs looking for some stuff I hadn't heard in a while.
Despite it being nearly ten years since I bought the CD, I have still not heard any of her other music so I have no points of comparison it. It doesn't matter to me that she is considered a folk/country/bluegrass musician. I like her fine in her guise as a swingmeister. Unknown to almost everyone except Adrian, this album represents a collection of "second" mixes that were used instead of the real mixes that appear on Lone Rhino. At the time this record was produced, the company had lost the original master tape to Lone Rhino, however, later the Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King albums were found by JVC, in their vault in Japan, and this past year they were re-released with the original mixes on Island - Japan. How on Earth would I KNOW that? Well, I'm the guy who mixed Lone Rhino, Twang Bar, and Here. The moment I heard Desire of the Rhino King, I immediately realized these mixes were out-takes, or "second mixes". Ants in My Pants

There is so much style, wit, and good musicianship here. My children range in age from 5 to 14 and they all enjoy it. I can't believe my library had only one copy and more people don't know Gunnar Madsen's name. There are several styles of music reflected in this CD and all are well done. My kids especially like "Don't Shake Hands With A One Eyed Pirate". We all bounce to "Two Coconuts", tune about little kids riding in a bike trailer whose helmeted heads look like two coconuts bouncing around. My children howl with the sad dog who is home alone during "Lonesome Dog Tango". Everyone of these songs is a winner. I would like to see Gunnar come out with more of this work.

This is one of the greatest CD's I have purchased in about a year or so. After I recieved my copy, I listened to it and it didn't leave my car CD player for a good month...it's that good!!!!!!! Do yourselves a favor and BUY THIS CD!
The haunting style coupled with her smooth voice is terrific. For those that have a sub in their car.. it will give that sub a nice work out with the low bass tones. It almost holds you down in your seat as this bass blanket covers you. Dang its good!! BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!

This CD came up as an Amazon suggestion. I listened to the preview tracks and liked what I heard. Now that I've had the CD for about a month, I really like this disc. It's very pleasant. Emiliana has a wonderful voice. The songs are somewhat chillout like.

I think that if you like Dido, Beth Orton, Suzzane Vega, Sarah MacLaughlin, and Natalie Merchant (toss in a bit of Chillout); you will likely enjoy Emiliana. She was a very pleasant surprise to me. Not at all Bjork like.
