Great ALBUM- this is what people are talking about when they advocate buying a whole album of one singer to get scope and a real feel for someTHING. Lonnie Brooks's voice is utterly seductive, and he USES it to sing the guts out of and into a lovely variety of bluesy/country songs and yet he sounds plenty city. Oddly enough, he reminds me of Otis Clay and Maria Callas in that you are likely to believe every word he sings. This is a special treat in an area that so often bounces around among formula blues, country smarm, and roadhouse noise just for the noise of it. Fun variety of good musicianship from everybody playing.

If you're one of "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, you already know that string bending, electric blues, is what I live for! The reason I bought this CD was I heard a song Lonnie cut with Stevie Ray Vaughn, and one song of Lonnie's, included on a classic blues album. Based on the two aforementioned songs, I enthusiastically bought this CD, hoping to get a lot of true Chicago style blues. I was very disappointed. Lonnie is really "swamp" or "Bayou" blues. That in my opinion, is a distant, distant, distant, 1/10 cousin, to Chicago blues! If "Bayou" blues is your genre, then buy this CD. If you're hoping for something in the realm of SRV, Albert, Buddy, Otis, Luther, you will be disappointed.

I am about as big of a Molly Hatchet fan as they come. As such, it was a no brainer that I run out and pick up this album of covers. Hatchet has always done a great job with covers. Their cover of "Dreams I'll Never See" from their first album is a classic. They've been doing "Mississippi Queen" live for decades. With "Southern Rock Masters" Hlubek, McCormick and Ingram revisit some of their favorite classic rock songs. However, as with any album of this nature there are some songs that are better than others.

I've never been a big fan of the Eagles, but any classic rock fan worth his vinyl collection is familiar with "Deperado". Hatchet does a commendable job here with Phil McCormick giving an exceptional vocal performance. He ... Read More:

It is absurd to hear 60-year-old men performing "Some Girls" and "Little T&A." Their first round of kids almost are as old as they were when they wrote these songs. They know what they're doing, that's fo sho, but very little about this is truly intimate or remotely creative. I'd love to hear this lot pick up a bunch of R&B songs they'd barely played and have a go, but everything is geared to making the maximum buck so the spontaneity and creativity are histor-y. There is no comparison to "Ya Ya's," and even "Still Life" is better because at least they mattered back then and were still pushing the culture at least a little. Is it any wonder Chuck Leavel is one of the most sought after Piano musicans working today. ( His credits inclulde The Allman Brothers Band , Eric Clapton ( His piano work on the "Unplugged" album is one of the reasons that disc was as popular as it was / is ) and he's been the defacto Musical Director for the Rolling Stones for their last few tours ) This great set buy Chuck with a stellar backing band is a must have . There is no need to be skipping any tracks on this set , just let it play ! He covers all of the previously mentioned musicans with an obvious favorite being the nicley reworked Allmans Brothers classic "Jessica" , which is certainly Chucks finest and most memorable piano solo ever recorded.
