NOT MY FAVORITE RENDITIONS - TRY CHANTICLEER

Palestrina (1524-1594) wrote in the dedication of his 'First Book of Motets' in 1563, 'The function of music in the church is the seasoning of devotion by the added delight of sweetness of song and variety of harmony. The sharper blame therefore do those deserve who misemploy so great and splendid a gift of God in light or unworthy things, and thereby excite men, who of themselves are inclined to all evil, to sin and misdoing.'

Thus, so well did his music embody that pious belief that a commission appointed by the Council of Trent to purify the church service in 1564 left Palestrina's compositions untouched , and bestowed special praise on the glorious "Marcellus Mass", ... Read More:

Bianciardi: Missa Octo Vocum

Michele Gasbarro directs Coro da Camera and Complesso Armonia Antiqua, a period-instrument orchestra, in a world premiere recording of Missa octo vocum by Francesco Bianciardi (1570-1607).

"This is a winner and I recommend it enthusiastically.... There is a lot of fine music waiting in libraries to be brought back to active life, and this is as worthy a representative of their many forgotten composers as you will find. Francesco Bianciardi of Siena died at 37 'when his star began to shine brightly'. He had found an equilibrium between Palestrina's strictness and innovative inventiveness. The poly-choral Mass (1605) reconstructed here has brilliant choral writing but kept subservient to liturgical requirements." (Peter Grahame Woolf, musicweb.uk.net) ... Read More:

Gregorian Chant for the Church Year

These are good performances; to my mind, more enjoyable than those on the more famous "Chant" series from EMI, especially as regards pronunciation: no nasal Latin here. Also unlike EMI's production, the notes and organization of this set put the individual chants explicitly in their liturgical context, which is important for understanding this gorgeous music. There are numerous minor discrepancies between what they sing and what is written in the Solesmes editions, e.g., the Palm Sunday hymn "Gloria, laus, et honor," the Easter gradual "Haec dies," and a few others, which I found somewhat jarring upon first hearing; that aside, it's a great buy.
