DAZZLING, DYNAMIC, DRAMATIC DANIELS!!!!!!!!!!
This recording in my opinion displays more than any other the versatility of David Daniel's perfomances. He shifts easily from character to character in these oratorios, his voice always making the necessary adjustments to do so. His tone quality is even throughout his range and his diction is always clear and precise, even at breakneck speeds as in the aria from 'Belshazzar'.
Handel's oratorio style was the product of many mingled elements. Germany, Italy and England all had a hand in its formation. But the work that Handel did in the development of the oratorio alone gives him the right to rank among the greatest of those to whom we owe the modern forms of music. David ... Read More:

This is the seventh album by the Flying Luttenbachers, a variously membered Chicago group led by Weasel Walter. Water started out in various punk bands in the city, but in the early 90s was struck by the improvising of little known Chicago master avant-gardist, Hal Russell. The first FL album featured Russell, but he left for other projects before his untimely death in 1994. Then for a while the Luttenbachers included Ken Vandermark, though contrary to popular opinion in other reviews, Vandermark only plays on two albums...Constructive Destruction and Destroy All Music. Since this time, Weasel Walter and his various bands have drifted from the punky free jazz of the earlier albums to more of a thrash/punk/jazz. Think John Zorn without the post-modern ... Read More:

Attrition is one of those groups that has to be heard to be understood. To try and describe them by labeling them dark or 'goth' or industrial darkwave or one of those 'gothic' bands just doesn't do them justice. Many would categorize industrial and gothic as a world of music that all sounds the same. Well sounding the same is what bad groups do. Attrition has a distinctly original sound that is unique to them. They don't sound like Funker Vogt. They don't sound like Lords of Acid. They don't sound like Ministry. Wait a minute, aren't all these groups classified in the same category? You see my point? Attrition doesn't even sound like Leather Strip despite both bands having an evident love of classical music.
So give them a listen. Their music ... Read More:

The beautifully captured reverberant sound of the acoustic space is matched by gorgeous choral balance, precise diction, and definitive interpretation. In spite of the contemporary style of the compositions - Rorem doesn't shy away from crunchy dissonances - this is a very enjoyable collection of Choral music with many beautfiul moments.

I thoroghly enjoyed the music, but I had a great deal of trouble getting past the weird dual-channel monaural audio mix. No one has come out and stated it as far as I can tell, but this is a MONO recording -but somewhere during the production of the CD the highs were shifted towards one channel while the deep bass was shifted towards the other.
And over all of it there was a sort of audio haze, as though you were listening through a heavy blanket. I do not believe this was part of the original recording because the fidelity is such that you can actually hear the musicians turn pages, take breaths and even shift in their seats. This audio haze is definitely "on top" of the recordings.
I do not ascribe it to tape hiss or any sort ... Read More:

Remember Ernie K-Doe's infectious hit Mother-In-Law in 1961? The bass voice you heard was that of Benny Spellman who, unfortunately, would spend most of his career doing background vocals for others, including Huey "Piano" Smith.
On his own, however, he could manage just one hit record: 1962's Lipstick Traces [On A Cigarette] which, b/w Fortune Teller, made it to # 28 R&B and # 80 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in May. The only other thing he did which even came close to chart success was The Word Game for Atlantic in 1965, which flirted briefly with the R&B charts but never could crack the Top 100. Other work at Alon, Sansu and Watch also failed to produce any hits.
For a while in the late 1970s he was reportedly working as a beer salesman ... Read More:

This is Ernie K-Doe, but it is not his original hits. He is singing them again and they just don't sound the same. It is amazing that some artists don't understand that fans loved their original hits.
