Son House was a delta blues giant that showed many followers like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson the way to play the great blues. Son House was really the embodiment of the raw, mystical, powerful and deeply emotional Mississippi delta blues. He produced many great recordings after his rediscovery in in the early 60's, and Son House did this concert in 1965 on a show where Mississippi John Hurt also played. To hear the acappella 'A True friend is hard to find' and the incredibly intense 'It's so hard', to me that is the essence of the blues. The other songs are classic live recordings as well, Son House is inspired and in full force in front of a receptive audience. Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

From the title of Colin Linden's new CD, you might think he was trying his hand at country music. However, the title track is a classic blues by Sleepy John Estes. With Larry Taylor on bass and Stephen Hodges on drums, Linden adopts a largely acoustic traditional approach such as on 1930's bluesman Bo Carter's (Mississippi Sheiks) tune "Go Back Old Devil." On Blind Willie McTell's "Broke Down Engine" Linden looses a slow mournful howl with Hodges heavy on the brushes. By track 4, Linden pens an original tune, "Nowhere to Go," that's given very similar treatment with fast picking blues guitar. One of my favorite tracks on the set is "A True Friend Won't Let You Drown" that Linden writes with Gary Nicholson. Its slower tempo fits with the emotionally ... Read More:

If you're considering a purchase go for the 1997 release (with the bonus cd). The extra bonus live cd clocks in at just over 74 minutes and really amplifies the "bang for a buck" quotient. The sound quality on all the included cds is exceptional.

The box design is relatively sturdy and presents the cds in a fashion new to me. Sorta like each plastic page houses a spindle for each cd where you flip through each album (?). Unique and probably cost effective.

My only gripe (albiet minor) is that the track listings' can only be found on the disks' themselves. For an artist as surreal as David Thomas, each track title has relevance to the musical composition. There is no lyrics printed (darn). The included booklet, though very good, ... Read More:
