Having seen the tour in Boston, I was intrigued by the possibility of a live CD from the tour. Was a Lauper and Erasure fan in the 80s, love the Dresden Dolls and discovered The Gossip. VERY dissapointed that this is just a compilation disc with a few unique mixes. Was really hoping to have some new live tracks of some cherished groups. Nothing on here interests me - at least nothing that I wouldn't go to the source (original release) for. I guess it's a fair sampler if you're new to the music.

To call this CD remastered is a bit misleading. I would have gotten the same results by sticking a cheap microphone near the speaker of an equally cheap television set.

The songs and sounds of the Marx Brothers brought back great memories but the skips in the CD and the overall quality of sound was a bit disheartening. If you love the Marx Brothers then buy this CD for the memories, as for the quality, I would definately think twice.

Jonathan Dove: Flight

I was introduced to Jonathan Dove's music when I saw this opera a few years ago, and while I have not heard this particular recording aside from the cuts available on amazon's site, I whole heartedly recommend it.

There are many modern operas that do not lend themselves to the theatre. The composers have little knowledge about what makes good theatre. Jonathan Dove is the antithesis to all these composers. He knows how to tell a story and make us care about what is going on. "Flight" is an incredibly magical opera--so rare nowadays--because is really works in the theatre. Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro

This seems to be one f the better installments in the Chandos series of classic operas in English. Frankly, it's a retrograde project, given that it took decades to convince the English to hear operas in their original language. But Figaro is full of wit, so an excellent English translation could be fun. Here, it's mostly not. The translation is fairly literal and clunky, showing no attempt to exhibit native English wit.

The performance is a warm, traditional one, which is refreshing. The characters sing with British accents, and that's damaging to the Latin flavor so essential to the household setup and class divisions. This is another solid collection from UB40, as stated in my other UB40 reviews, I am not an expert or authority on the band, maybe that makes my review more relevant to you - since if you were a fan you'd already have this album. This is a better collection than Labour of Love in my estimation - an album that "fans" often point to as one of their favorites. If you had to only own two of their albums this would have to be the second one - well maybe a tie for second with the album Geffery Morgan. Get it, you'll like it.
