Not quite the club track collection advertised, Nu Afro Latin bases it's roots as much in the sampledelica and drum machine style of early hip hop as their proclaimed Latin and African flavors. As can happen, the spicy percussion and instrumental flare (flutes, sax and such on "Allen Fresh" wah-guitar of "Your Mum") are a treat, but the chanting and whooping it up can be a bit much.
Treats include Fila Brazilla turning in a joyous mix of "Royal Rumba" and Fazed Idjuts (a Faze Action/Idjut Boys collaboration) delivering a fine eleven minute drum excursion. And you could say Masters at Work know a thing or two about tunes.
Bottom line: a commendable effort for those seeking a strong African vibe with a house beat.

Tony Allen was the much-revered drummer for Fela Kuti's legendary Africa 70 ensemble; as such he was largely responsible for crafting the relentlessly infectious, driving marathon beat of the Nigerian supergroup. This remix project features a host of artists, from soul-oriented rappers to electronic mixmasters. Several tracks, particularly the instrumentals, are appropriately hypnotic and captivating, while some of the vocal numbers seem a bit off the mark. Maybe that's because Allen's genius was rhythmic and nonverbal, and by wedding his work to flavor-of-the-day lyrics, it pulls the listener in unnecessary directions. Anyway, keep in mind that's just my reaction, and I'm pretty picky. Afro-beat fanatics will not be disappointed by this ... Read More:

As you probably know if you searched for Ah My Goddess and found the soundtracks available, I feel that this is the best of the lot.
There are 49 tracks on this disc and I enjoy just about every single one of them. Some of the music actually appeared in the Anime (I don't think they fit all 74 minutes of music in the series). My favorite tracks are the female Japanese vocal tracks. This contains the OVA opening theme and end theme, along with a really cool mix of the opening theme with an excellent piano solo to start it off where they basically play the entire opening theme on the piano before it busts out into the full opening theme. Also contained on this CD (along with the other original soundtrack) is that little musical blurb ... Read More:

I'm really feelin' 'Constant Elevation', lots of bangers on this one. I don't think the title fits though, since the elevation certainly is not constant. I have tons of illbient, down tempo, and turtabilist compilations from '96 and '97 that sound a lot like this one. Nothing groundbreaking or different here...but all of the tracks are quality. The El-P track could have easily been on Company Flow's 'Little Johnny...' breaks album. Really dope...but if you are looking for that next ish...check Chocolate Industries or Big Dada.

DJ's Jurr and Roelove have been spinning at the Supperclub for quite some time now and this, the fourth in their series of compilations, is by far the most satisfying to date. The first disk, la salle niege, keeps a nice range of memorable downbeat tracks. (And most of my friends tell me that downbeat music is never memorable, how wrong they are!) Most impressive is the selection and blending in the middle tracks: Mr. Suitcase, Life Changes, and Chez Roger Boite Funk. The second disk, le bar rouge, is a great mixture of funk and house. Once again the selection and blending of the middle tracks is amazing. Overall the set has a great groove, and really captures the experience of the restaurant and club, which is a must if you ever find yourself ... Read More:
