I am very disappointed in this product. First of all, the music is very high-pitched. Second, Bob does not sound like himself at all. Third, on some of the tracks you can barely hear him singing. We will just have to wait until it is released on the Tuff Gong/Island label. Save your money!

Sound quality is poor at the outset, like so many shows. Trench Town Rock and Burnin' and Looting' sound like poor audience bootlegs. The sound system is tuned in by the time we get to No Woman No Cry and Lively Up Yourself. Those two tracks are the highlights in my opinion. The audience is very appreciative and enthusiastic throughout. Still, I would recommend this only to people who can forgive bootleg sound.

When this recording was made at The Bear, an astonishing club/restaurant housed in two adjoining Louis Sullivan mansions across from Chicago's great Medinah Temple, the stage needed to be reinforced to accomodate all six Gospel Pearls as they stomped and jumped through this fantastic recording. The Bear, started by the irrespressible Howard Alk, formerly of Second City, took over L'Aiglon, a 40 year old classic French restaurant and re-opened with Louis Bussiere, chef, in the kitchen and Bob Dylan, singer, on stage. The Gospel Pearls were one in a string of fantastic performers, including Laurendo Almeida, Ian and Sylvia and most amazingly, Muddy Waters, that played in this incredible club.

Several here have already written lengthy reviews that I agree with, so I'll just hit two key points:

1. IF YOU'RE NEW TO BOB MARLEY OR REGGAE IN GENERAL, THIS SET IS A GREAT PLACE TO START! It has pretty much all the hits from his entire career as well as some lesser known gems. I'm not even a big reggae fan, but my wife got me hooked on Bob Marley, and after hearing the 14 or so cuts on the "Legend" cd, I wanted more. Here, across 34 tracks on 2 cd's, there's just not many songs you'll feel compelled to skip. If the price of this 2cd set is still a little high, you may consider the multi-platinum "Legend" cd instead, but be warned: "Legend" gives you just 14 or so tracks while "Gold" is just a coupla bucks more and gives you more than ...
