This box set on the great Austrian born, German and later Broadway star Lotte Lenya collects almost everything she ever did in front of a microphone. From the first recordings she made of the iconic "Threepenny Opera" ("Die Dreigroshenoper") to the erzatz James Bond theme song "Youngblood", and even her appearance on Dick Cavett (commenting on his attire as "you look like a pimp") where she sang "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" arranged down to a three note range. Besides the 11 CDs with many very rare or unreleased recordings, the box includes a book with extraordinary photographs (particularly the set shot on the docks in postwar Germany, one of which was used for the German "Happy End" LP cover, stunning). Particularly welcome is the score of ... Read More:

My wife is Irish and I am German, having bought a fabulous CD of German Children's folk songs we felt we needed an Irish equivalent for our 8 month old. It was difficult enough to find this CD and my wife was very pleased to hear nursery rhymes which she had not heard since her childood. The one disappointing thing was that there weren't as many longer songs on the CD as I would have wished. There are very few and don't really last more than a minute.

DON'T BUY THIS CD. I've bought it twice and both my copies have manufacturing defects. CD 1 "skips" about every fifteen seconds. it's not actually skipping, but there must have been some sort of error in the mastering. CD 2 plays fine until the last track at which point it skips (really skips, unlike cd 1) like crazy...avoid THIS mortarhate version...I'm not sure if the Go Kart version has the same defects.

Lost in the Stars is quite possibly Kurt Weill's magnum opus for the American Theater. It is however almost impossible to produce today because you need a black leading man with great charisma. He also needs a voice that could sing Porgy in Porgy and Bess (both roles were created by the luminescent Todd Duncan). This recording has a great singer, Arthur Woodley in the title role and the rest of the cast is equally good in support. No one should be without the Decca Original Broadway Cast Album, Todd Duncan's performance is for the ages, but the songs are so badly cut to fit the restraints of 78 RPM sides, that the overall structure of the piece is crushed. So much important missing music. Now Weill lovers and lovers of great theater music ... Read More:

The first disk of this set is amazing. It thumps at about 160 bpm and the sounds are so rich. Every track is a winner. This is the ideal album to "open your third eye" to, if you know what I'm saying. It's also great to drive along to, but it's hard to keep from speeding. Also ideal for a full-on rave. The best from the Goa Head series.

I've always been a huge fan of Buddha Bar-esque (hip trendy bar/pub/restaurant in Paris) music and Les Bains definitely takes the cake! Disc One is a fabulous compilation of the best remixes and remakes of a range of musical styles from R&B to Bossa Nova to Latin jazz. My fav? Cada Vez. Disc Two boasts smooth acid and ambient grooves which are perfect for those lounge lizard nights. One of the pricier discs but worth every cent!
