This CD pairs two Elvis releases, his classic first album from 1956 "Elvis Presley" and 1968's "Elvis' Gold Records Volume 4". While this is a nice set if you do not already own the individual releases, it is a rather odd pairing.

"Elvis Presley" was rock and roll's first hit album and probably the first rock and roll album period. This album is underrated and under appreciated for its impact on popular music worldwide. It went to number 1 on the US album chart and stayed there for 10 weeks. As originally released in the US it contained 12 great songs and was a huge hit in the US and worldwide. This isn't worth the price to get out of print CD's. I recommend that you go hunt through Amazon or eBay for those out of print CD's. I just recently started from Scratch on collecting Elvis CD's and I was lucky to get my hands on some mint condition CD with titles such as Tigerman, Essentials 4 and 5, and That's The Way It Is 3 CD Box set. There are albums on this box set that are out dated because the DSD Technology and the fact that FTD has a deluxe version of the Classic albums. The interviews in this Box set is cool but if you search online for a CD Album call Word for Word. I believe that you will get all that and more.

To say that Elvis' 1968 NBC-TV special was a "comeback" would be kind of understating the matter. The truth is that it was more like an out-and-out resurrection. For much of the 1960s, the man they call the King was being overtaken by younger disciples like the Beatles, while he was forced by his penny-wise, pound-foolish Colonel of a manager to make largely appalling B-movies that destroyed his considerable potential as an actor--that and the equally appalling songs he had to do in those films that almost ran his music career into the ground. He had begun to make strides back toward his roots earlier in 1968 with "Guitar Man" and "U.S. Male"; but it was indeed that TV special that sealed the deal.

When this monster of a box set came out, along with it's sister set The Blue Suede Shoes Collection, I didn't think much of it. RCA/BMG was beginning to package some truly great Elvis sets (the 3 Masters sets, a slew of alternate-take sets) and content- and quality-wise this looked like a throwback to the pre-CD era, with nothing really new or interesting except the interview CD (and the poster, which I must admit is pretty neat). The "Camden Mentality" one reviewer called it, and that's pretty much still true in regard to content. The passage of time, however, has made this (and the blue set) something of a collector's item. This CD features '68 Comeback Special performances that were not featured on the Memories CD or the Tiger Man CD. It features the complete dressing room rehearsal tape from June 25. This features Elvis and his buddies jamming and joking around. The show producers occasionally interject a suggestion. This was recorded on a home tape recorder, so it's not professional sound quality, but it is very listenable. The CD also includes the "stand up" peformances that were not featured on the Memories CD. They are the same songs as on that CD, but from different performances. You can tell that Elvis really got a charge out of performing in front of a live audience after such a long absence. He gets really fired up, but he makes a few mistakes.
