by: Jabbo Smith

Release Date February 22, 1996
Obviously, the 'editorial review' above has no connection with this set.

Jabbo Smith had his shot at stardom with the Rythm Aces recordings in Chicago in 1929. Barely 21 years old, his technical ability and improvising skill are just boiling over on these sides. He even plays a remarkable TROMBONE solo on 'Lina Blues.'
Smith's playing was far too advanced for the records to sell very well at the time, and admittedly the ensembles lack the easy friendlyness of the Louis Armstrong Hot Five recordings that they were hoped to rival.

Smith drifted to Milwaukee, and eventually out of music, until he was rediscovered in the early '60s.

In a Downbeat blindfold test, Dizzy Gillespie said, after hearing one of the ... Read More:

Search: Trombone Blues
by: Joseph Alessi, Jonathan Feldman

Release Date September 04, 2001
Joseph Alessi has proven himself to be accomplished in all musical styles on this fantastic album. "Improvisation No. 1" (Enrique Crespo) is my absolute favorite of those listed on this album. A Grade 7/virtuoso piece, it demands many unusual techniques and effects. It is a contemporary work, but can't be written off as "one of those weird contemporary pieces" because it makes as much musical sense as anything by Mozart or Beethoven. It contains every extreme: fast and slow, soft and loud, rhythmic music and recetative candenza-esque sections. It is truly a must-hear for any lover of classical music, trombonist or otherwise.

by: Rick Stepton

Release Date May 26, 1998
The beauty of the internet, and indeed it's curse, is that everyone has a say, whether it is informed or not. All opinions are valid, of course, but in a public forum, it is especially helpful to back one's assertions with illuminating examples, which the previous reviewer did not. It'd be helpful to know what music and musicians he or she does find inspiring; since none were listed, it is best to assume that they're taking their first few tentative steps along the path of musical and personal maturity.

Buddy Rich went on record as citing Rick Stepton as his favorite lead trombonist. If you already knew that, then you'll also know that Rick was also a featured soloist with Buddy's band, as he also was with Woody Herman (The Raven ... Read More:

Release Date October 17, 1990
The 1st few tracks are live in a studio it seems. But as well as great trombone - like all the sidemen are very special and sound that way too. Nat Adderley, Tommy Flanagan shines thru here and there with terrific lines and accompaniment, Max Roach has a burning solo, also Victor Feldman and others.

Search: Trombone Blues
by: Clifford Hayes

Release Date June 23, 1998
The Frog label has long been a byword for the meticulous compilation of outstanding rarities, and this reissue is no exception. Clifford Hayes' Louisville Stompers presented a fascinating blend of country blues and jazz, featuring trombone, violin, 4-string tenor guitar and piano. Earl Hines is at the ivories for the 1929 sesssions, of which unissued takes are included for each of the eight tracks. The 25 tracks are augmented by the vocal by Sippie Wallace which the Louisville Stompers accompanied on their final recording session. The reissue was remastered by the late John R. T. Davies from his own collection. Enough said.
