The Cast isn't exactly remarkable, but thats not to say they don't all give good performances. Steve Balsamo has a clear, powerful voice, but there have been better Jesus'. Zubin Varla makes a fine Judas, but,like most Judas' before him, his voice cracks and wails to often. I suppose this helps define the character, and it's a nice effect, but I get a little tired of it. Joanna Ampil is nothing special as Mary, but David Burt plays Pilate quite well. Peter Gallagher has a strong deep voice, and makes a fair Caiaphas. At times his voice loses clarity and becomes muddled, but he holds his own. Martin Callaghan only has one verse in this highlights album as Annas, but his deep, dark voice is a great escape from past Annas'. My main complaint ... Read More:

What I was looking for when I bought the CD was the remastered copy of the original album, the one that was played in coffeehouses all over the U.S. in the 70's. I still have the vinyl but it is too scratched to be a good candidate for ripping to the computer. This CD was not the same people, same notes, etc. I'm looking for a very specific recording and have thus far not been able to find it. I returned the CD after discovering that it was not at all what I wanted.

As you can tell form the reviews already here, this is a spotty recording. There are parts that flat-out work brilliantly-Amy Ray's performance as Jesus is excellent. I love how she handles "Hosanna." Emily Saliers does a great job as Mary Magdalene, especially on "Everything's Alright."

Other tracks will leave you scratching your head. Dave Clair's drunken take on "King Herod's Song" just sounds sloppy. If I have an overall complaint, it's the mix-very muddy, with the vocals sometimes lost in the mix completely.

If you're looking for Broadway show-stopper stuff: run screaming in the other direction. If you like folk/acoustic rock, have an open mind, and welcome new interpretations, go for it. There are gems on these discs. Just like in real life though, ... Read More:

Ok, so, comparing the soundtrack and the original album to this, we are missing a couple songs. You really need Blood Money to get the full effect, yet this version seems to do well without it, despite the fact it is a key song. The song from the movie soundtrack is not necesarily needed, but I thought it was a good addition. Musically, I like the updates. And Mary Magdelene, OH-MY-FRICKING-GOD!!!! The Mary's on the other versions are great and right for the time, but Renee Castle is phenomenal, I don't care what anyone says. "I don't know...love him" had me in tears. Of the three, I think this is the best version I've heard. She combines he best of the two previous Mary's and yet is a unique and wonderful Mary Magdelene. This CD replaced a cassette tape I made about 20 years ago from an album that was already worn. I love the clarity. The product was delivered as promised and in perfect condition.
