Though it's fair to say that the stunning title track reaches a creative standard unmatched by any of the later items (no wonder it comes first), this is still refreshing stuff, which will bring out the slumbering Maurice Chevalier in us all. Anyone who can hear it without wanting to grab the nearest straw hat and proclaim "Zank 'eaven for leedle girrrrrlz" is a tougher man than I am, Gunga Din.
Refreshing stuff, but seldom flippant. Other than the X-rated Honegger song (who'd have thought sober-sided Artur H had a bawdy streak in him?) and the subtler but still eyebrow-raising Maurice Yvain number "Yes", the prevailing atmosphere is often surprisingly operatic. Surprising at any rate to me, since I can't recall hearing most of ... Read More:

The Belcea Quartet is one of the strongest of the relatively new chamber ensembles coming before the public today. Just a glance at the catalogue and the spectrum of music they tackle is impressive - Brahms, Schubert, Britten, Ades, Faure, Poulenc and now Ravel, Debussy and Dutilleux. They are an exciting ensemble.
The performances here of both the well-known string quartets of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are clean, free of excessive emoting, and transparent in the best sense of the word. The phrasing continuity among the instruments is seamless and in the tutti sections the sound is sonorous and never pushed. These are both very fine performances.
Added to this generous CD is the 'Ainsi la nuit' by Henri Dutilleux, ... Read More:

It may be disingenuous of me to give a 1-star review of a recording that is of the highest artistic merit, but I have to say that this issue is an incredible betrayal of customer loyalty. I contacted Naïve (in my very best French) about this marketing gaffe received no response.
I have long refused to burn CDs out of respect for the artists' work. I hope I have the opportunity some day to hear the third disk of this recording, but it won't be because I have purchased it. Nor will I ... Read More:
