Anywhere I Lay My HeadSearch: Town With No Cheer by: Scarlett Johansson Release Date May 27, 2008 I just wrote a response to someone for a Waits album in which their pop sensibilities wouldn't allow them to get past the way that his voice sounds;I think that a version of the same thing's happening with this album.Waits fans don't seem to be open to other people singing his songs because they sing without the same "soul" that he does.Yeah,Scarlet isn't a professional singer,but I don't think that's the main point either.She's rich,she wanted to do versions of Waits song,she got together an interesting band,and got the album done.I never saw a bunch of hubbub about her going out on tour or anything for this;it wasn't made to make money but as an experiment I think--and it's an interesting one at that. Let me say this album is something of a minor miracle. It's hard to describe how evocative it is, but there is something about the coupling of the musical production and the lyrical imagination that is pure magic. When Waits creates the character of the American soldier on shore leave, who talked baseball with a lieutenant and shot billiards with a midget until the rain stopped, who bought a razor and some gum and knife and a t-shirt with horses on the front, the ambiance is enhanced by the clinging cowbells, thumping bass and other musical innovations that bring this scene to an almost theatrical life.
