I am not particularly a fan of opera but do realize it's merit. I also appreciate the talent of it's artists. This 2 disc set offers a wide, wisely chosen selection from most of the popular operas, performed by most of the world's greatest singers, present and yesteryear. Yes, you will find legends such as Maria Callas to Pavarotti to the up and coming Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu; sharing space on these discs. Economically, I was able to obtain this set for under ten bucks. My research could not find a more varied set with such a stellar roster at any price. It will impress any novice to seasoned collecter. I wish that EMI annotated the set better, a brief synopsis of each track would have tutorial value. The sound reproduction ... Read More:

What a lush and lovely collection, featuring one magical and exquisite presentation after another! As I said, if you adore opera then you will treasure these CDs. The 2 CD album states: Long drives, Lazy afternoons, Romantic dinners. My favorite however is to put it on when I lie down to sleep. Currently it resides in the CD player by my bed so that I can access it with ease. These scrumptious performances carry me to a lovely cloud and allow dreamy relaxation.. I recently acquired RAPTURE which I also heartily endorse.

The Best Opera Album in the World...Ever!

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

A blessing on DG for putting this together particular Panorama . It is literally an opera lovers dream come true! It's a rare 2 cd set that doesn't have a few dull spots. Not this one that contains the very best parts of 6 of Puccini's best known works and the heavenly voices of Freni, Tebaldi, and Ricciarelli opposite the magnificent voices of tenor stars Domingo, Carreras and Bergonzi. Not to mention Samuel Ramey's forbidding Scarpia, Raimondi's Timur, Hendrick's Liu, D'Angelo's Musetta plus a number of familiar names in supporting roles. Then we have Von Karajan, Sinopoli, and Batoletti as conductors. Is this opera lover's heaven or what?

If you are a Puccini fan you absolutely must have these cds. If you're not one, buy it anyway ... Read More:

This is by far my most-played CD - I've had to make it a weekend only listen to prevent getting burned out on it. HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you are unfamiliar with some of the pieces, you will quickly learn to love them. . . . I must end this review - I'm off to listen to the "flower duet" for the 100th time. . .
