I am a BIG FAN of Eyvind Kang's work--from his own stuff to his work with Secret Chiefs 3 and his contributions to Bill Frisell's jazz work, I am continually amazed at the diversity and ability of this guy. He was a perfect addition to Secret Chiefs 3, because Kang can put all forms of music together into wholes, jazz and ancient rhythms and reggae all able to sit within the same song, all of course played exquisitely.
I also maintain with gusto that John Zorn played himself out a long time ago, his improvisational noise (believe it or not) formulaic, his works predictable. But I give the man full credit for opening the door for many another artist whose work might not have gone with much notice had it not opened under the obscenely ... Read More:

I got this CD based on wanting to explore more of Kang's individual work. Kang is well known for his collaborative ventures, but I was curious to see what he would do if left alone; if he were allowed to do what he wanted basically.
This CD is classically Kang, whether you're seeking the soloist or the collaborativist. Kang has an ability that defies rules when it comes to music, and I think that this ability is best described as "He writes it, we feel it." So often in music, interpretation is such an important part of the message. Sometimes it hits the mark, but often it doesn't. Kang has an ability to deliver the message as intended, and this is evident in this production.
I won't speak about the type of music or the instruments used, ... Read More:

I saw Phosphorescent open last night for one of the most (over)hyped bands out of SXSW, Bon Iver. The concert could have ended after Phosphorescent and I would have gotten my money's worth.
Me sitting in my cube listening to this band after a quick and cheap download from amazon is the culmination of the internet. I'm shedding tears of pure joy right now. I had never heard of this band before yesterday. And today, I'm adding Matthew Houck and his lovely troupe to my top 5 bands of the year. Its only March, too.
Aside from putting on a helluva show, the music captures the spirit of the live music. Often times when I buy the album after a great live concert, I'm disappointed by it losing the "live" feel. However, the production ... Read More:

The quality of this EP is astounding, covering some old favorites and introducing some excellent new material. The abundant collaborations create a variety of distinct sounds that keep it interesting. "God Damn the Sun" is almost -- almost -- as good as the original, and as a longtime fan of The Swans, that's impressive in and of itself. All in all, a solid release, and definitely one of my favorites from Manufactura to date.
