The only reason that I gave this collection four stars is because it doesnt feature my favorite Van track,"I'll be your lover too". Other than that, if you arent going to buy the individual albums(like me), then this is a great collection that summarizes the bulk of Van's most well loved songs. A prolific and beautiful songwriter, Van has penned timeless classics that have endured the test of time. Buy this album and go for a long drive alone with this album as your companion and you'll understand what I'm trying to say.

This is another masterpiece from Van, one of his most beautiful, poetic albums. The opener, Torn Down a la Rimbaud, not only has a great title (how many rock musicians talk about Rimbaud), but it's a great opener and a precursor of things to come. The instrumental, Evening Meditation, lives up to its title, being one of the best instrumentals that Van ever recoded. The songs The Master's Eyes and the cover of Ray Charles's What Would I Do are impossibly gorgeous. My 2 favorite tracks here are the title track and the spoken-word adaptation called Let the Slave. Let the Slave is one of Van's best spoken word songs. He adapts the prose of William Blake beautifully, and this song includes one of Blake's most memorable lines "all that lives is holy". ... Even if you have all or most of his CDs, it is worth hearing some of the best songs in a different order with this newest anthology! Of course, opinions greatly differ as to which songs are the best! You may prefer to simply concoct your own personal anthology of our dear Van Morrison. On the other hand, this (the 3-CD version) is a very good, if not ever perfect, choice of songs.

It's hard sometimes to admit that there are bad Van Morrison albums, and we all know that he's released a bunch of them. Fortunately, this isn't one of them. The band is tight, Van is in a zone. Go ahead buy it; make my zen.
