I first heard Eric Ewazen's Oboe Concerto on the radio. It fascinated me immediately. I obtained that as well as this CD. It's new, original, tonal music. The parallels some poeple have identified with Copland is apt & relevant. The sound is expansive, colorful, with enough contrasts to enchant you for as long as it plays. I admire Ewazen's daring of being himself rather injecting some dissonance for the sake of being modern. He is refreshingly modern, melodic & original. Highly recommened.

Despite lots of omissions--and the fact that it's 14 years old and in desperate need of a sequel--"Just for the record . . ." is a colorful, exciting package for Streisand-addicts. Casual fans probably won't like the melding of demo track-into-actual-recording strategy that Barbra takes on several songs, but for those of us who already have those songs, it's an interesting way to get the gestation of the music. Omissions: nothing from "For Pete's Sake" or "Funny Lady", rare B-sides like "Frank Mills", "Look", "My Love", "Funny Girl(pre-movie), "I Am Woman You Are Man" are missing, early single versions of "My Coloring Book" and "Happy Days" are also MIA. But the best of what's here is worth mentioning: a live B-way performance of "My Man" on the final ... Read More:

Leave it to the legendary Babs to FINALLY get over her stage fright, let go of her perfectionism, and tour just in time to have 100's of thousands of fans in 7 countries witness the shockingly bad and deteriorated voice of the century. I saw two of the shows LIVE and have no desire to relive the disappointment on DVD. How I long for the 'old Barbra' and her perfectionaism and genius. I don't mean to be so critical of my all-time favorite vocalist and entertainer; but getting old really sux.

If you want to listen to just her songs, don't buy this set. It's nothing but Barbara Streisand running her mouth!
Play the music and shut up, Barbara!

Rosemary Clooney is one of the few singers I can think of who sounded better as she got older. A nice bonus is the backup of saxophonist Scott Hamilton on some of the tracks. He's great as well.

This album is a welcome rerelease, if something of a mixed bag. Released mid '60's as an attempt to capture a more pop audience for Sue, it has some curious inclusions like "Georgy Girl," "Love Me Tender," "Yesterday," & "Groovin,' as well as her semi-'hit,' "I've stayed Too Long at the Fair" (lovely version-- I prefer to Streisand by a lot). And some lesser known ones of merit like "I Can Hear the Music" & her own very catchy "Once Was a Time I Thought" with near be bop meets pop vocalese. A solid effort, if not as vital as most of the other more jazz albums listed here that are available-- & certainly a daunting price. But if you love Sue, you'll want it as a demonstration of her versatility-- or if you want a more pop side to a fine singer.

Until I heard this album, I thought June Christy's recording of "Midnight Sun" was 'it.' No more. Every aspiring female [jazz or 'great american songbook'] vocalist should listen to this CD, over & over. It is one of Ms. Wilson's finest.
