It doesn't get any better! The best Bluegrass band ever at it's peak! You get both great eras. Before Josh Graves and after Josh Graves. Josh joins them and plays the best Bluegrass dobro of his career on these cuts. They still had that great sing songy driving beat that they lost later in their Country/Folk era. And, of course, the early days. Absolutely pure Blugrass at it's best! I've been listening to Bluegrass since the 50's. Take my word for it, this one is a must!

Even though this cd took way too long to arrive, It ended up being worth the wait. I bought this cd because I don't have enough money for the box sets so if you want all the flatt and scruggs you can handle, with the least amount of money, this is essential. Dim lights Thick Smoke, Jimmie Brown the Newsboy (Earl Scruggs on lead acoustic guitar!), and I'm lonesome and Blue are all definite reasons attesting to the fact that we all need this! Hearing Scruggs on acoustic guitar makes me want to quit playing mine! I'm sure Flatt didn't give him too many turns on the 6 string because it may have made him look bad. This 4 CD set from Proper records is a wonderfull collection. Plus its a great value. For those folks who want or just need a sampling of fine Blue Grass music this is it. Of course there's Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs and a sampling of other folks. Yes its just centered on the 1940's and 1950's, but what an era to base a four CD pack. It has a good balance between sacred music and Blue Grass classics. Its great picking and fiddling that will leave you wanting more.
