In 1984, singer Annie Haslam, after releasing two badly received synth-pop albums with her formerly progressive rock band Renaissance, decided, in a sense, to get back to her roots. She had Betty Thatcher, Renaissance's primary lyricist, put words to 11 classical pieces. Some are quite well known (Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake", Bach's "Air on a G String"), others more obscure (Chopin's "Opus 10, No. 3", "The Pilgrim's Chorus, from Wagner's "Tannhauser"). Louis Clark, who had done orchestral arrangements for ELO and Renaissance's "A Song for All Seasons" album, did the honors again here.

Nice album. Good arrangements. High quality recording - it feels like you are in the same room with the band and you can hear the individual players. I liked the very interesting version of "Eleanor Rigby".

There's something about a husky woman's voice-think Mabel Mercer-or a man's feminine voice-think Little Jimmy Scott-in jazz balladry that, when it's done well and nuanced with mature reflection on love lost, regained, found unexpectedly or stolen irrevocably, reaches into your ears and rearranges your brain-stem. It reaches across gender and that's what it'sd all about. That's what srtikes one on first hearing Eric Lindberg. He's got a bit of a breathy voice that can evoke both of those singers and a bit of Mel Torme, besides.
