First off, this is my first experience with this particular opera so I have no prior bias as to the tempi and clarity of the score to compare with.
I found the tempi in general to be fantastic, but I will admit that I am an up-tempo junkie so this recording suites my tastes just fine. That's not to say that there is no range from slow to moderate to fast but at least the tempi in this production avoids middle-ground heavy mush which is the worst place for an Italian opera to languish in. I will admit that there are a few points here and there where the vocalists cannot keep pace with the orchestration but that hardly warrants a failing grade.
The music has a vibrant (mostly due to it's up-tempo disposition), engaging, ... Read More:

This is hands down the best preacher boy album yet. maintains all the weird eclecticism of "crow", but gets back to the blues roots of the first blind pig albums. like "a golden thimble" for example. spooky, strange, haunting, but kicks it in that old delta slide way of "the cross must move". preacher boy's vocals have matured to where it's not just growl, but also lots of theatrical textures, and his lyrics just get more poetically great all the time. "spaceman" may be my favorite preacher boy song ever. a must buy.

First off, this is very definitely not the same Ataris that wrote "San Dimas High School Football Rules"; I mean, it's the same band, but you wouldn't know it.
Welcome the Night is a phenomenal step forward for the band, both aurally and lyrically. The album employs a much more lush musical landscape, unfamiliar with heavy distortion and power chords. The sound is still rock, but it's much more mellow than previous releases. There are a few radio-friendly tracks that still channel The Ataris of old.
Even those "mainstream" tracks delve much deeper than most of their previous work. "Welcome the Night" is ripe with introspection, regret, and a strong focus on faith. [Lead singer] Kris Roe draws largely on the events in his own ... Read More:

Thanks and thanks again to Newport Classic for yet another "find." In this case, the of Andre Messager (NPD 85635/2), in English, with the indefatigable Ohio Light Opera troupe under J. Lynn Thompson. Having given us a welcome in the best Victor Herbert tradition, Newport Classic now gives us a fully staged version of this post-Offenbach work on two CDs. Okay, the plot is fluff. Okay again, the old EMI version in French had a lot more elegance (and none of the tiresome dialogue). But there is no other "Veronique" in the catalogue now, at least in the USA, and the producers have thoughtfully given the dialogue separate tracks so it can be cued out on repeated hearings. Is it, I keep asking, possible to read lines like these ... Read More:
