John Lee Hooker is a blues icon. His guitar, his songs, and better yet, his sound are all so original and awesome. And he has always been well deserving of a collection in UMG's 20th Century Masters series.

Positives
-Great song choice. 'One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,' 'It Serves You Right To Suffer,' 'Ground Hog Blues,' 'I'm Bad Like Jesse James,' and 'Walkin' The Boogie' are all here for your pleasure.
-The sound quality is excellent.
Negatives
None.

One may want more JLH after hearing this CD, but if your a casual fan or a beginner, this is perfect. Another excellent entry in the 20th Century Masters series. ENJOY!!!

I had a smattering of John Lee Hooker compilations but this one shames all of them. This is like his biography done in a similar style to Eric Clapton's "Crossroads" box set. I like chronological compilations so you can hear the artist "develop". If you love raw blues and you don't have this put it on your Christmas list!!!
P.S. I think that Shout Factory is doing a good job of re-releasing some classic music such as Marshall Tucker Band albums. I bought most of these and have played them to death!!!

Being familiar with Hooker's body of work, owning various albums yet being a victim of DAT being a dead horse you may be forced to shop for a CD containing most of the stuff that you once had on DAT. Having always rated his VeeJay recordings among the best he put out I enjoyed that some of those tracks are here. Also "It serves you right to suffer" from his Impulse album makes a wonderful inclusion. Even though I never found the late stuff true to Hooker in his prime I enjoyed "The Healer" within the context of the album. Truly a good buy even though it cannot quite substitute my personal memory having walked the streets of Frankfurt, Germany, after an American Folk Blues Festival with the man himself.

I was pretty J L Hooker stupid when I bought this. I only bought it to have a copy of 'Boom Boom'. But this is pretty good stuff. The guy who is mainly into hard rock and heavy metal is finding this very good. There are a lot of good songs encompassing his career. If you are just beginning to delve into the blues, pick this up.
