Before they burst into mainstream stardom via "Woodstock," Country Joe & The Fish recorded a pair of "talking magazines" -- 7" EPs that were an outgrowth of McDonald's political publication, Rag Baby. The first, recorded in 1965, contains the original versions of a pair of songs that would turn up (in re-recorded form) on the band's debut album. "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" and "Superbird" are both rendered as folky jug-band tunes, the former overdubbed with war sound effects, and the latter with a directness that bites even harder than the later album take. The flip side of this original EP contained a pair of tunes from folk singer Peter Krug, "Fire in the City" and "Johnny's Gone in the War," each rendered in a straight ahead vocal ... Read More:

I'm not sure why this CD lists its copyright as 2003, even though it appears to be just released this year. While the insert is an insubstantial one page with the song titles & times, this is some excellent Leon Russell music. The opening track bounces profusely with Russell's trademark piano, "Right from the time that we met, I was so warm & you were so wet, better yet, I tasted you with my eyes." "Lover's Hideway" has a Spanish-flavored melody, "The feeling of love was so strong, I still remember, that look in your eyes seemed to say I love you too; When you kissed me, you took me all the way." "Big Lips" reminds me a bit of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire." "End of a Love Affair" plays like a slow winding pop tango. Fancy piano ... Read More:

George Olsen was an excellent bandleader whose musicianship and taste were exemplary. Playing was solid and the arrangements were excellent. It was the vocals that made the difference. Twenties vocalists were a very hit and miss proposition. They were not nearly as important as they became later, and the technology and recording equipment demanded singers with a specific range. So the tracks that work best on this CD are those with solid vocals; the ones that stink have the bored vocals by any number of second string performers.
Tops on the first list are three songs with vocals by Ethel Shutta, who was George's wife at this time. She was funny with a silly German accent, languid singing of Lou'siana, and charming with the Precious Little ... Read More:

Ordered shortly before the death of Jerry Reed, this CD did not disappoint. The fact that Jerry was older than the Smokey and the Bandit days ( who isn't?) was evident in his voice, but he still obviously enjoyed himself and he could still play the guitar so well! This is a good value for the price and will not disappoint.
