You can't help but think of home when listening to gypsy music. While the culture is mostly centralized around Romania and the Balkan nations, the sound has travelled al lthe way to the likes of Poland and other Central European nations. Being from that land of pierogis myself I can't help but reminisce to warm, sunny weekends, spenading time with family in our yard on the outskirts of Warsaw. Sipping tea underneath our huge oak tree. This music will bring you home no matter where you're from.

Collectables once again comes up with a 20-track CD for a group that had less than ten hit singles - and leaves off two of those hits. While I will never understand their rationale, I have to admit that this one is to be counted among their best offerings. The sound is flawless and the liner notes informative.
Danny Rapp [lead], David White [first tenor], Frank Maffei [second tenor], and Joe Terranova [baritone] first got together while in high school in Philadelphia where they called themselves The Juvenairs. In 1957 they had their first release under their new name for the small Singular label, but when ABC-Paramount picked it up it was changed from Do The Bop to At The Hop. With Sometime (When I'm Alone) as the B-side, and with the ... Read More:

In a charted singles career that spanned twenty-six years, Oklahoman Ollie Imogene [Jean] Sheppard [married to Hawkshaw Hawkins at the time of his death in that infamous March 5, 1963 plane crash that also took the lives of Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas], racked up 45 Top 100 Country hits, thirty-one of which made the Top 40, including two duets with Ferlin Husky and two more with Ray Pillow.
In this mix of singles hits and LP cuts, you get five of her charted singles: A Dear John Letter [# 1 for eight weeks in 1953 with Husky], A Satisfied Mind [# 4 in summer 1955], Beautiful Lies [# 4 in fall of 1955], I Want To Go Where No One Knows Me [# 18 in December 1958], and Second Fiddle (To An Old Guitar) [# 5 in summer 1964].

Mike Ness is one of the few people who can pull off convering old country songs and make it sound good. Most often, even with most so-called "new country" artists, the music is cheesy and overproduced. On this recording, the old school, raw and earthy sound of country is alive and kicking. Ness has the right voice for it too, with his natural nasal twang. The guitar work here is down and dirty country and rockabilly too. This is real, authentic, roadhouse country music.

Jean began her recording career in the early fifties and had country hits up to the mid-seventies - not as many or as big as she deserved, but she certainly made her mark. Jean's biggest hits during the period covered by this box of five CD's (up to 1964) included A dear John letter (a #1 duet with Ferlin Husky), Forgive me John (a reply to the previous hit, also with Ferlin), A satisfied mind, Beautiful lies and Second fiddle to an old guitar. All other hits - indeed everything Jean recorded up to the end of 1964 - can also be found here.
During this period, Jean was often overshadowed by two other country queens, Kitty and Patsy, but Jean played an important role in gaining recognition for female singers of country music. Jean often sang hard-hitting ... Read More:
