This comeback of Art Pepper meant the performance of excellent albums, this one and one year later other of my favourites, "So in love". Love was making its way on Art's music and he was able to perform beautifully. He blew so naturally, showing his feelings rawly from his guts. Art Pepper shows he was the prototype of a musician and fame made him hurt although he liked it. Really he never was thinking of making the most commercial album but the most honest album instead. This album is the evidence and the quartet as a whole made a real jewel. Enjoy it, you won't be disappointed.

I'm on a personal crusade to make the world get hip to one of the most underrated, overlooked pioneers of jazz, Eddie Jefferson. As early as 1939, he was experimenting with penning lyrics to recorded horn solos, a syllable for each note, note for note verbatim, and singing them while incorporating scat techniques. What was a fun way to kill time for Eddie eventually blossomed into a whole new area of jazz expression, called "vocalese". I'm surprised to see this one still in the catalog. Al Cohn's tenor prowess throughout his career is widely documented in numerous musical contexts, though some of his best long-playing recordings (especially "Cohn on the Saxophone" and "The Blues Is Everybody's Business") are unlikely ever to be released on CD. Home-town hero Spike Robinson (he graduated from high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin) is another matter. Waiting until the mid-1980's and his mid-50's to devote full time to playing his horn (he worked as an engineer), he had little time to make his mark before suffering a rather precipitous decline in health during the last half of the 1990's. This is another of Lone Hill Jazz's efforts to find and repackage rare American jazz, and it's a winner. "Generalissimo" and "Live Date!" were recorded in April of 1958 by clarinetist Buddy De Franco and some great jazz instrumentalists. The former album, a play on De Franco's last name and that of the Spanish military leader, features Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Bob Hardaway on tenor, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Curtis Counce on bass and Alvin Stoller on drums, playing standards,be-bop and ballads. "Live Date!", which actually was recorded in a studio, features Hardaway and Kessel, plus Herbie Mann on flute, Victor Feldman on vibes, Pete Jolly on piano and accordion, Scott LaFaro on bass and Stan Levey on drums in the same general ...
