Search: Theres A Boat Dats Leavin Soon For New York
by: Joe Henderson
Release Date October 07, 1997
The elements of Joe flow throughout the session, you can hear of his signature sound and jazz vocabulary constantly at work.
A fabulous session by the master tenor sound weaver.

by: Earl Wild
Release Date June 01, 1990
I purchased Earl Wild's first recording of these pieces on vinyl in 1978, and literally wore it out from playing it over and over. What incredible technique and musicianship! This newer recording on CD is just as amazing. If you wish to hear great Gershwin melodies transcribed -ala- Franz Liszt's operatic fantasies, then this is for you.

Release Date September 12, 2006
The big hype on this recording is that it is the Porgy and Bess that Gershwin really wanted. Well here's a strange problem to consider. In 1936 Gershwin recorded excerpts from Porgy and Bess, and Lawrence Tibbett sang "The Buzzard Song" with Gershwin conducting. (This is a must for anyone loving this opera: Helen Jepson, Lawrence Tibbett and Gershwin conducting. Wow.) Now if Gershwin didn't want it in the score, why did he record it? BECAUSE THE 1935 VERSION IS WHAT HE HAD TO SETTLE FOR. Some of the reworked sections are nothing more than rewrites to facilitate cuts. Reorchestrations are another matter. They should be studied. But to claim this is Porgy as it should be performed is erroneous.

Before you declare something an antique, that is. The set is readily available in its original format, with full literature and artwork. There was room for improvement with sound balance, but ARTs are usually worse than the original! Jesus Bucket of Fried Chicken Christ, we're not that old!

Great collection of Gershwin! All the major songs from Porgy and Bess, Rhapsody in Blue, plus others. Not as bluesy as in some recordings of these songs, the soprano (Claudia Lindsey)is more operatic though not excessively so. Fifty-five minutes. Very nice.

The Ed Sullivan Show, during the heyday of Broadway's Golden Age in the 1950s and 1960s, would often present highlights from current Broadway shows on the program. Sometime this just involved a cast member singing a number, and other times it involved performances in full costume with sets and dialogue scene lead-ins. In the process, this allowed for the preservation on film and tape of many aspects of classic Broadways shows not preserved on their cast albums, and enhanced the legacies of shows that are for the most part lost forever.
A two CD set featuring audio from some of these performances seemed like such a good idea and one can't fault the choice of selections on this first volume (a second two CD volume was chiefly devoted to ... Read More:

When I got the product the third disk titles were all in an asian looking language. I couldn't read a thing it said. Vendor took the item back, and gave me a refund, I was well satisfied with that...but wished he had had the one with all english, it looked like a good album.

Of course those who are familar with P&B will have their favorites among the recordings (I tend to be partial to the 1940-42 original cast recordings myself). But I like this for what it is. There are only a few others where you will hear versions of tunes from this folk opera that don't ordinarily appear on recordings (such as my beloved "Somebody's knocking at the door" and "Jasbo Brown's Blues," etc.) But for what it's worth, this is an excellent long and complete version of P&B and I strongly recommend it for fans.

This album is not what I expected. It is listed as a "Cast Recording" which implied to me it would at least be the songs as performed on Broadway by a 'Cast'. Instead it is 100% instrumental and then only a medley of each of the individual songs.
